I was never a fan. We had the local commercial bread bakery (Smith) that also made sweet rolls, cinnamon rolls and honey buns. They put about 1/2" of hard white icing. Sweet rolls were family six pack but the cinnamon roll was the size of a red house brick. Soft fluffy heaven that would sugar shock a black bear. A Smith roll and a Barqs rootbeer would cure the side effects of fine Columbian gold. It was the 70s.
