I really need to get there and pick up a 709 - hopefully still 299.00...
Got an 809 for that price last year this time.

I've been watching both the 709 and 809. Hoping that they will discount the PT809 last week of the year (as members here have reported that they did).
709 has been listed for $299.99 as the "everyday price" for a while....anyone ever see it cheaper at Academy or elsewhere?

Not really. I've been waiting to see if they discount it the last week of December, like the did the 809 last year.
With recent events, not sure if discounting is going to be on their priority list right now.

It's the "Clear them out before we get stuck with them" sale.

Their weekly ad has the Rossi .44 snub for $269

True...discounting may not be a priority...yet these sales are in the works for a while with a company with that many locations/volume (I'm guessing).

This sale now has me considering the PT-92 over the 809, since I was going to spend that anyway if the 809 wasn't discounted for end of the year as before.

So for those who purchased one of these specials, did it come with one magazine or two magazine? From the description it reads as only one.
I went to the Academy in Sugar Land (suburban Houston) on my lunch beak and bought one. (Put that Tristar shotgun on hold, for now.) I got two mags with bright yellow followers. Clerk said one was a 19-rounder, the other a 17-rounder. I'll figure out what they really are later. Pistol came in a cardboard box, not a plastic case, but that's OK. Asked the clerk how many they had left. He said, "As many as you wanna buy." He said that the PT92s had not sold well on Black Friday, for some reason.

There were more people there than usual, but it wasn't a total madhouse. It was a little frustrating at first, waiting while two different clerks gave long lectures on various pistols to two different potential buyers who didn't seem to know one end of a pistol from the other. (Probably Obama voters.:)) One of these did eventually decide to buy a pistol; it was evident that the guy had never filled out a 4473 before. When they finally called in more clerks, I grabbed the first one and told him I wanted to buy a PT92, holding up my driver's license and CHL. It didn't take too long after that. My two buddies were still looking at long guns when the manager perp-walked me to the cash register. We still had time to hit McDonald's.

Edit: Forgot to mention that another guy bought a PT92 while I was filling out my 4473.

Academy has many locations in multiple states; they're certainly a high volume dealer.

The PT92 gives you an extra inch of barrel, which should give you more muzzle velocity for a given load, but it's probably less concealable. (I don't own an 809.) I have carried my old PT92 concealed in a shoulder holster under a coat or jacket, on days when it's cool enough to wear one down here, but that's not often.

Can't imagine why they'd get stuck with them. No weapons were confiscated in 1994. It was still legal to transfer pre-ban weapons and pre-ban high-cap mags after the 1994 ban took effect. If I were in their position, I'd replace the mags with cheesy 10-rounders and sell the high-caps at a premium after the ban. But that's just me. I'm really glad they're such nice guys.:)

I went in and checked one out.. I'm thinking about it.. the new ones are so much lighter than the older ones....at least they feel like it... my 92 and 94 year makes feel heavier to me.. but they do have the accessory rail.... always a plus.

The rail wasn't really a factor for me. I'll probably never hang a toaster on it, or anything.:) The big factor was the price. I bought my old PT92 for $200 (plus tax) in 1985. According to the Inflation Calculator, that $200 would be $411.38 at the end of 2011. Figures for this year aren't in yet, but that adjusted price could be anywhere between $420 and $4200.:) A PT92 at $330 in today's devalued dollars is just too good a bargain to pass up. It's like buying a Lotto ticket when the cash payout is more than $26 million. It's one of the few times in life when you get better than fair odds.

I follow ya... I wonder if academy would let me bring my older pt92 in to compare the weights side by side...

Not sure about Academy, but Cabela's lets you bring them in. I took my 809 in, mags out, slide locked back, in a pistol bag. They checked it at the front counter, ran a zip tie lock through the action, and let me head back with it to the gun counter to test fit some holsters. The guy there cut the tag so we could release the slide, and once we were done, he walked me out with it.

Can't hurt to ask at the gun counter.

Maybe you borrow a postal scale and take it to Academy. Weigh the new pistol at the store and your old pistol at home.

Duh! Pardon my senior moment there. Why not just look at the manuals? The new manual says the weight is 33.9 ounces. (Go to http://www.taurususa.com/product-manuals.cfm and download the "Metallic Pistols" manual.) What does your manual say?

I had decided to buy more ammo instead of another pistol but this sure is tempting esp on the PT92 !

Both of my older pt92's were bought second hand, no manuals... but they definitely feel heavier than the newer models..
