On September 9, 1921 one of the greatest long range shooting matches of all time took place at the Nationals at Camp Perry. Dad Farr was 62 years old and didn't even own his own rifle. He took a Springfield 1903 off the ordnance rack to shoot the match with. He had a homemade spotting scope and used standard G. I. .30-06 issued ammo.

"George (Dad) Farr fired 71 consecutive bullseyes at 1,000 yards using an unfamiliar rifle plucked from an ordnance rack earlier that day with iron sights."

His string ended at 71 due to darkness. Nobody knows how many more bullseyes he could have shot had it not gotten dark.

Well I guess I'm the only one impressed by this. Since nobody does any long range shooting without a scope these days they wouldn't understand just what kind of talent it would take to hit 71 consecutive bulls eyes in a row at 1,000 yards with an off the rack gun with iron sights with military issued ammo.

1,000 yards = 3,000 ft. One half mile = 2,640 Ft. Still nothing????

That seems superhuman on many levels.
If someone told me that story without backing it up, there's no way I'd believe it.

It is amazing what some can do. I wish I could do half that with iron sights. I don't use a scope simply cause I like the challenge of irons.
I would love to have seen that happen live....would have been amazing at 20 bullseyes....71....unreal!

It takes some incredible eyesight to accomplish that task! (The Marines tested my oldest son at 20/10 vision, when he was serving and was ranked "expert.") Having worn glasses since 4th grade, I cannot begin to comprehend that ability. Thank you for sharing this piece of history.

With iron sights the coming darkness would have made no difference to me. I couldn't see a target at 1000 yards in broad daylight without a scope, let alone hit a target at that distance. You can color me impressed!

They should have let him keep shooting, he might have pushed it over 100 even in darkness. Some guys have it, some don't.
