I am thinking of buying a 24/7 Pro in .45 ACP.

I like the long slide model, but am really undecided on barrel length.

I have read about all of the failure to feed issues, and magazine issues, and my first question is this:

Has Taurus fixed their issues with the .45 24/7 Pro? Can I reasonably expect to get a reliable pistol in this 24/7 Pro?

And my next question, is there a barrel length, or revision number that is more reliable against these issues? How do I tell which revision the retail store is selling me? I read that the Millennium Pro is more reliable in the third revision, but I have not heard anything about revisions on the 24/7 Pro.

Any info would be appreciated. I'll be buying in the next month or so.

If you get a Pro made from 2007 on you're pretty safe. Check the dates on the messages you see about feeding problems. My (4 inch) Pro .45 has had no feeding problems at all. The main problem right now is that Taurus doesn't want very much for you to get in touch with them. No email address, long phone waits. It's odd to me because I grew up in a time when customers were valued.

I know nothing about Millenniums, but you can find the date of manufacture from a serial number. Sometimes you can get it through the Taurus web site, but a woman on the phone there seemed shocked at my suggestion that the site should be kept updated. Also there is a mold stamp in the Pro .45 dust cover that gives you a pretty close date if you know how to read it. As I recall, the year is on the outside circle.

My Brother-in-law works at the place where I am going to buy from. I'll ask him to make sure he gets me a long slide manufactured in 2007. He says he thinks they only made the long slide in 07, but I'll have him make sure.

I pretty sure the long slide was made for more then one year. I have a 2006 and 2007 model 24/7 Pro 45 and both have been 100%, the 2006 model has 9700 rounds through it so far with out one single problem. I have not had a chance to shoot or talk to anyone who owns the long slide version so I cant help ya there

UPDATE: 24/7 Pro in .45 ACP Barrel length vs. reliability

I ordered my 24/7 Pro Monday night.

I ordered the 4 inch barrel, not the long slide. I was having trouble finding any dealer who could even get the long slide. Like the OSS, it's nearly impossible to locate one in stock in this neck of the woods.

So, since I have never even seen a LS model, I decided I was better off going with the same model that I have held, dry-fired, and drooled on for the past two weeks.

After the police check my background, I'll pick it up, and report how it works.

.45 ACP

I wanted a .45 ACP because I do not like 9mm, too dangerous in the fact that it penetrates too much. The 40 S&W I really do not know much about. I felt the .45 was almost as common as the 9mm, but the .45 is big, tough, and American, damnit. And maybe there is no justification for it, but I also do not want any scumbags to be able to shoot back at me.[1] Sort of the same thing that John Dillinger said about choosing a .45:

"I shot a guy with a .380 once, and he shot back."

I feel ya on the .45/ I also feel you on the shooting a scum bag. I have shot and killed two scum bags who broke into my house in my life so far and I can gairongoddamnteya I will not hesitate to do it again

MPanova... you got me beat. In 21 years of police work I have shot and killed one single perp. I'll have to work on bumping that number up. (Just kidding) Taking a life is one of the most difficult things to deal with, scumbag or not.

Doesn't that kind of depend on the round you're using? Using milk jugs of water I put the Taurus .45 185 copper (HP) through 2 jugs, where it stopped against the 3rd one. I shot a Lawman 230 through 8 jugs and as far as I know, it's still going.

Yea, of course you can change the characteristics of any gun / caliber by changing the ammo, but generally speaking, apples to apples, a 9mm has more penetration than a .45 acp.

My point was to suggest that a well expanded HP shouldn't be dangerous to "the surrounding environment." I'm surprised, but I'm probably least well read or experienced of anyone here.

Is there a lot of data on issues stemming from 9mm hollow point over penetration?

My 24/7 45cal is an earlier DAO model, never a single hiccup, fart or any other kind of problem. Lot of myths and BS floating around the internet and sadly alot of local gunshops about how worthless Taurus firearms are. To bad its mostly bull and not the facts.
