I always like the line : Whatever handgun you decide on ... Be sure to put a thick coating of petroleum jelly on it....So that when the bear shoves it up your pipe it won't hurt as much. (edited for language)

I will admit to also carrying a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .357 mag as my trail gun when I lived in Washington State.
Honestly if the first shot or two doesn't stop the bear it will be too late for any more lol.

And reading the post below, Buck shot out of a 410 to the head will have enough penetration to reach the brain, so buckshot might be good for bears as well

And u could also use these instead of 410

    A good 45 LC (standard pressures appropriate for a judge) can only push a 255 gr. rd @ 900 fps in a 5.5" barrel- Only 765 fps in a 2.5" barrel. A 44 mag can push a 320 gr. rd 1265 fps (6" barrel) 1125 fps from a 2.5" barrel....These are not comparable cartridges.

I like the idea of mace in my left hand and a .357 in my right. The more the deadlier with the .357 seven shot.

It will handle most things in the South, I am planning a trip to Alaska to hike through Denali, I will be getting a 44 for the misses and I will get a 500 Smith with a chest rig, just in case you only get one shot

I'd go with the .44 for sure, loaded with a heavy hard cast gas-checked semi-wadcutter and half a can of 2400. You won't get off more than two shots before one of you is dead.

I have nothing against the .44, but I'd go with my 66 357. You can get some really good rounds from Buffalo Bore and Double Tap that have excellent performance measurements:

    2. 4 inch S&W L frame Mt. Gun

    a. Item 19A/20-180gr. Hard cast LFN = 1375 fps
    b. Item 19B/20-170gr JHC = 1411 fps
    c. Item 19C/20-158gr. Jacketed Hollow Point = 1485 fps
    d. Item 19D/20-125gr. Jacketed Hollow Point = 1603 fps

But all rated safe in any 357, and the recoil is managable. Get the 180gr and you'll be set! Personally, I am in the what you can handle/enjoy. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Many fishing guides in Alaska carry short barreled 12 ga. shotguns with rifled slugs slung across their backs

    Ballistics Information:
    Muzzle Velocity: 1560 fps
Muzzle Energy: 2361 ft. lbs... twice the muzzle energy of a .44 mag.

44 for sure. Either the Tacker or the 444MULTI. The ultralite is about 6oz lighter than the Tracker and has one more round.
