There's been a few threads in the last few months about identifying older Taurus .38 Special revolvers. I got digging through old pictures and notes and threw this together this afternoon. Far from complete, but I hope it may be of some service:

Taurus Medium Frame 80 Series .38 Special revolvers, old versions (early 80's and before).
Note that there are newer versions and different configurations. I'm not concerning myself with them. These are my personal observations of older style revolvers I've actually seen.

Model 80:
Pencil (tapered) barrel, 3 & 4", fixed rear sight (grooved top strap)
Compact grips (wood or plastic)

Model 82:
Heavy 3 & 4" barrel, fixed rear sight (grooved top strap)
Compact wood grips, later used wood "target" (larger) grips

Model 83:
Heavy 4" barrel, micrometer adjustable rear sight
Compact wood grips, later used wood "target" (larger) grips

Model 84:
Pencil (tapered) 3 & 4" barrel, micrometer adjustable rear sight
Compact grips (wood or plastic)

Model 86 (Target Master):
Heavy 6" barrel (I've seen one earlier 86 with a 6" pencil barrel), micrometer adjustable rear sight
