any info on an old Taurus model 80?

went into a LGS to buy some ammo and came out with an older model 80. This thing is awesome. Pinned and tapered barrel, linear grooves in the flutes on the cylinder and the top strap. Pachmayr American Legend grips as well as original grips. The blueing is perfect and the action is superb all the way around and the price was right. I have an old Smith 10-5 with a tapered barrel and this model 80 is as good or better I kid you not. Question is does anyone know when these were made?

I have owned a few 80's, even re-barreled one. I know they were made in the 70's through the 80's. But not sure when production shifted to the model 82. Too bad Taurus no longer dates by serial on their web page. Up until last year they did. You could always try chatting or calling Taurus CS and see if they will get off their duffs and look it up for you.

The grooved flutes tell you it's the early version. They stopped doing that in the early 70's if I recall correctly. My 84 has that style cylinder, and dad bought it new in 1969 give or take a year or two.

    Good looking revolver...congratulations!

It didn't. The 80, 82 & 84 were made & marketed side by side for quite a while.

If memory serves me best it was about 1970-1974 when the flute groves were discontinued.

That dates it. I believe they were the importer pre-Interarms. Now don't bet the farm on these dates but Taurus importation began in 1968 and I think Interarms picked up the line in the early-to-mid 70's sometime? Bangor Punta (which owned S&W) bought a controlling interest in Taurus in 1970, and it was sometime after that they switched importers.

    My best guess is 1968-1973.
