    Anyone Carry The 617?

Just interested in anyone's impressions or experience with it, for carry? What I have heard, initially, is that there are no or almost no holsters that will fit it exactly. Is this true?

Also interested in hearing opinions on whether you guys feel it has enough firepower for carry? 7 rounds is better than 5, but it's still not much compared to semi-autos? So if anyone here does carry the 617 I would appreciate hearing how you feel about, from all considerations, as a carry gun? I have one, and it strikes me best as a "tweener" gun. That is, I'm not sure I'd carry it, and I'm not sure I would make it my first choice for home defense, but it would make perfect home back-up gun, a glove compartment firearm, or just a good weapon to stash around the house within reach if needed in a pinch. Sort of an all-purpose handgun, but maybe not the best for the primary roles?

    What think ye, Taurians?

I have been carrying and shooting the same Taurus® Mdl 617SS2 since 05/2003 and can attest that it is outstanding in all respects. Mine is very accurate with 158gr ammunition, 38 Special and 357 Magnum. It further serves as my primary home defense handgun. I can't say enough good things about my 617!

S&W617 It's a 6" K frame. I think you can find more the a few large frame revolver holsters. For carry? Hunting varmits or small game.

Taurus 617 is like the S&W
    686. Holsters should be compatible as well.

I carry a 617ss2 all the time. Took a little getting use to the extra weight over a 605 but I adapted pretty quickly.
I have found the extra weight helps with the recoil of the Hornady-critical-defense-ammunition-357-magnum-125-grain-flex-tip ammo I use.

I have both the outside and inside the belt holsters made by Barsony. Both are belt clip holsters. I carry inside the belt 95% of the time.
I put wood grips on mine and it is very comfortable to shoot. It is as accurate as my 82 year old bones are capable of.

Give it a chance I think you will like the 617ss2.

Has anyone ever cut a 617 for moon clips? If so how did that work out? I hear the .38/.357 rounds are not as easy or fast to reload as 9mm because they are longer? Has anyone here ever compared the two?

I bought my 617 from a member here on the forum. It's a most excellent gun and I am quite happy with it. I carry it in an Alien Gear OWB holster that can be found on their website. It fits the gun like a glove.

    Grips are Altamont Silverback.

    DJH / TexasTaurusGuy,

    1) I guess the 1.53" width is not a problem?

    2) Do you carry a speed loader or moon clips?

I have used speed loaders, but I ordered some 7 round speed strips and like those much better. The width is no issue for me.

I carry a 617 on occasion. I carry owb in a Bianchi Black Widow holster. With a good belt the weight is not a problem. Holds as many rounds as my two best semi carries.
