Taurus 85 SS 3in Range Report

I had a chance to get out to the range, and here are the results.

It is a good shooter for such a short barrel. I shot a variety of loads including 130gr 38spl standard load, 125gr JHP Golden Saber +P, and 158gr SWC reloads. About 100 rounds total. All shot from a sandbag rest at a 50 foot target. A little far for defense, but I wanted to get an idea about it's capability. There was about a 15 mph crosswind from the right.

On the 130gr 38spl group, I thought that I was shooting high, so I held with the front sight bottomed out in the notch. I suspect if I had held a target sight picture the rounds would have been up in the black. It will take more practice to get used to shooting the short guy.

Accuracy was about what you would expect from a snubbie. The +P group was blown out a little. Not sure what caused the reloads to be so wide a group, but they were borrowed rounds and I will check again with my own.

I included 1 group fired from my S&W Model 19 4", shot at the same time for comparison. You should remember that the Smith was made in 1971, has a target hammer and trigger and I have fired thousands of rounds through it. Needless to say it is well broken in, but it's cylinder lockup is just a tight as when it was new.

    Here are the targets.

3" barrel, shooting at 50' with a cross wind, I would say good shooting.

While the Target Pics are okay.........................

I happen to like 3 inch barreled Revolvers and it looks like you have a good one from the Targets.

Your shooting works for me. Sounds like you have a fine firearm. I'll have a 3 inch revolver one of these days.

Due to the rising cost of ammo. A warning shot will NOT be fired!!

Re: Taurus 85 SS 3in Range Report

I've got a couple of 3"ers. My 85 is a 2" stainless UL, but I have a 3" Rossi 68 that's similar to the Smith 36, very nice gun. I have a 3" M66 which is similar to the very rare 3" K frame M19s. The 85 is thinner, lighter, and easier to carry than the 66, but the 66 shoots .357. Still, it's a bit much for daily carry IMHO. The little 85 is much easier to tote. 3" medium frame .357s are a lot easier to carry than a 4" in the very same gun, though. Really odd, that, but it's true, and the longer sight radius is easier to shoot well than a 2". If you're not going to pocket carry the gun, a 3" just makes a lot of sense.

Re: Taurus 85 SS 3in Range Report

I made it back out to the range this weekend and have a report.

Received the CT LazerGrips this week, installed and adjusted the Laser to point of aim of the open sights at about 50 feet. They say they are zeroed at the factory, but these were off, and so were two sets that a friend bought.

At the range, set up the targets at 40ft (had to move the target in a few feet because of bright sunlight), Shot 10 rounds to verify the settings and all seemed on the mark. Then I shot the 5 round group below. I am very satisified with the results compared to the previous week's performance.

    I also shot the friends M85 2" with the same model grips (LG-385) and same ammo. The group was not near as tight, I estimate at least double. The wind was brisk from the right (always is at this range, it is Idaho after all), but the 3" barrel seems to stablize the bullet much better than the 2" (actual measurement 1 7/8");

I will try to take the time to get a picture posted of the M85 with the Crimson Trace LG-385 grips installed tonight.

Hope this helps anyone that is trying to decide on a 38 spl for protection/concealment.
