I need some help with this please

Advice is requested on this revolver

    Taurus 607 .357 magnum

It's on GunBroker and obviously not NIB. "Shows use but very good and is ported" is the only description given. I think it's a fine looking revolver.

What is it worth? (how much should i pay?) Is it too risky to buy sight unseen? What year - how old?

Sorry I can't really help with your questions but I will say it's a sharp looking firearm!

I'd be comfortable paying around $350 or so. Looks to be late 80's to mid 90's. My 1989 model 66 is still going strong.

The last completed auction went for $495.01 with four bids, but it was a 6" and had a ventilated rib. I tried the serial number in the Taurus site but I can't read the last two digits well. All my guesses came back "no record".

The M607 was made from 1995 to 1997 and replaced by the M608. It is a 7-round .357 Magnum approx. the same size as the S&W M27 N-frame. These are currently selling anywhere between $450 and $550. They are a very solid revolver easily capable of handling HD Magnum loads of up to 1.725" in length. Spring kits and grips for the M608 fit the M607.

Wasn't one of those vent rib and the other not? You look up pics of 607's and you see both with and without vent rib but I'm not sure that's right, they could be mislabeled.

The 3" non-ported and 4" ported barrels did not have vented ribs. The 6.5" has the vents. At least that is true in the examples I have seen. The M608's have different barrel threads than the M607. Early M608's have the same rachet design as the M607, but later models went to the same design as the M44. I believe, but may be mistaken, that this happened at approx. the same time as the change from the squared cylinder release to the streamlined one.
Taurus USA can't give me definite answers on these.
BTW, M607's predate the current production database.
The quick way to tell an M607 from an M608 is to look where the bolt slots are. If they line up with the cylinder flutes, it's a 607. If they are between the flutes, it's a 608. Of course, you could also open the cylinder and count the chambers. LOL

I want a 6" 607 pretty bad. If memory serves, the 607 was the first 7 shot .357.

I saw a 4" M608 at a local pawn shop this afternoon for $429.99. I asked about it and the guy said they could probably do $400 out-the-door. I noticed the "inventory date" on the back of the tag was 03/2016. The usual gun counter guy was already gone. I might go back and see just how low I can talk them down. I was really looking to replace the Shield 45 my wife took away from me Sunday, but for the right price I might be persuaded.
