Older Model 85 .38 special. Can you use +P?

I have an older Model 85 .38 snub nose. From some earlier research I found that the gun was made i March 1990.Is it safe to use +P ammo in the gun or is it not recommended?

If the manual doesn't indicate +P, I'd check with Taurus. If you are going to err, make sure it's on the safe side and don't use the +P until you've confirmed through the manufacturer that it's ok.

    Welcome to the forum!

It's always best to check with the manufacturer.

That said, the answer is no. It wasn't until the mid 90's that Taurus rated the 85 as a +P gun.

Not to worry though, there are many excellent standard pressure rounds out there that will do the job.

On my early 85s, I sighted them in with Corbon 125g. 38 +P. After that I practiced with standard loads. The only other +P shooting was trying Hydro Shocks and LHP +P. From what I have read if you shoot a lot of +P it will stretch the frame, accelerate ware, and make it go out of time. I always limmited +P to very limmited amounts.

Up Date 7/16/20. These days I practice with 130 gr. FMJ and carry Speer Gold Dot 135gr. 38+P. It has been proven on the street by the NYPD. It has been successful stopping bad guys.

Can anyone suggest some standard pressure rounds that are desirable? I have the same issue with my old Model 82.

Wait...do you really have a 3" 85 in stainless? Am I seeing that right? Wow, I'm impressed!

Take care of it. As others have said, you don't really need +P ammunition. I trust my life to 148-grain wadcutters, standard pressure, in a S&W Model 37 Airweight.
