    new guy used PT1911

Hello all. Longtime Taurus 85 owner, first time poster.
Have been interested in the PT1911 since they came out. Had a SA 1911, and currently have a nice Remington Rand all original 1911.
Don't like putting rounds thru the RR, been watching for a PT1911. Prices have really seem to be falling.
LGS offered me a great deal on this PT1911. Looks like new.

One mag, original grips included. $296 otd! Aug 2015 s/n
Had a heck of a time taking the comp off, don't plan on using it.
Slide wouldn't release by pulling back, took the shok-buff out now that works.
Right grip wasn't properly fitted, made safety tight.
Fixed all that, heading to the range today to try it out.
Noticed the factory mag has a mec-gar baseplate, did they make the mags? Do GI mags work in these?
Also when running the s/n it comes up showing heinie sights, yet has a novak stamped rear sight and a fiber optic front sight, were they stock?
Any idea who made the grips?
    Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Nice pistola at a good price, yup GI mags work.

Welcome to the forum from Northern Illinois! My PT 1911 SS purchase was what brought me here when researching the best value in 1911's. My was delivered with Heine sights and I've never changed them as it worked well shooting it in USPSA. I initially put Pachmayr American Legend grips on mine and had to use the right OEM panel as a template to remove wood for the right side ambi safety. The safety levers had a habit of falling out early on and when mine did so, I had a gunsmith install a left side safety only. It has since gotten a S & A magwell/mainspring housing installed and an extended slide stop, along with some magwell length Caspian stocks that were on sale and I couldn't pass up.

It is one of the last guns that I would ever sell.

decent price on a used PT1911, as long as you don't find any bad Jury rigged problems inside the weapon.
Taurus weapons just do not hold much resale value and you can find good prices on used ones.
I bought a couple new PT1911 at very good prices myself.
anyway taurus web page was not exactly gospel and several bad (wrong) things are listed on it, the early PT1911 had Hienie straight eight sights on them, this was a single front and single rear dot, they quickly went to the novak or novak 2 rear dot sight set.
The PT 1911 has never had a factory fiber optic sight on it to my knowledge.
Mec -Gar has made taurus mags, so could be a mec gar mag?
heres a picture of the PT1911 with Hienie sights on it.
any true 1911 magazine should work as long as its the correct caliber.

Took it out and ran a box of 230gr berrys plated bullets over 5.3 grs of unique. Fed and fired without a hitch thru the factory mag and several surplus mags. Poor accuracy, about 7-9” at 25yds. Same load goes 1 7/8” in my 1917 and 4” in my Remington Rand.
Was quick to get on target and accurate enough for defense at 7 and 15 yds. But expect more accuracy from a 1911.
Also kept seeing a spark near the chamber when firing and it seemed like it had a good bit of blow back. Lots of dirt in the locking grooves and all over. Could be Im not used to a stainless .45 and it shows dirt more.
Will try some swc loads and factory loads next.
The Taurus mag is a mec-gar, both names on the mag body. Here is a picture of the front sight. I think it’s a hi viz. The front fiber sight is growing on me, very fast for old eyes

If you're still using the comp for a bushing, that could be the accuracy problem. I have a stainless nat match bushing in mine, and it makes one hole groups at 10 yards, and under 2" at 25, IF I fire from a rest...
