Continuing my international buying spree - My review of a used PT1911 9MM

I am trying to be an equal opportunity gun buyer as proven by my last several purchases. Turkish Tristar 20 GA semi, Back to USA for two fine Smith revolvers and a Mossberg 22, Then the Philippines For a TCM/9mm, Back to USA for a Sig, Then to the wacky rev Moon and his Kahr TP45, on to Germany for my PK380( ok kind of), then off to Austria for a Glock19 G3, followed by a trip back to Brazil for a Taurus PT1911 in 45, next a return trip to the NE USA for a Colt 1911, now on to Serbia for a neat Tokarev, back to Austria for a new G5 Glock 19, then a return leg through Yugoslavia for a Makarov, followed by a trip to Ruger land for a used P90, and finally back to Brazil for a used 9mm PT1911. Phew... I am tired

The Makarov is still in transit and should be in by the weekend, so I thought I would cover the used Taurus PT1911 in 9MM. These are hard to find in 9MM , at least locally, so when I saw one (once again hiding in the back of a shelf) I had to liberate from those who didn't appreciate its internal worthiness. Seriously I keep finding gems hiding on backs of shelves at the LGS counters. I almost look for those pistols being hidden or ignored as potential buys any more.

Size: 703.5 KB The tagged price was $359 - I asked to look at it, did a quick look through it, and found the extractor was needing tuning. So I began the haggle with the poor sales guy. He admitted the customer who traded it in, had mentioned he was having an occasional issue, but unclear as to what that was. Oh sure dude..At least most of the salesmen I deal with these days are pretty honest with me, gee they aughta be I spend enough money around here at LGS's. When I showed him the extractor issue with a snap cap, he let his guard down. I offered $279 and got it for $310. By the way if you can't tell I enjoy the whole buying process , especially the haggle.

Size: 1.34 MB The SA trigger is average for a 1911, almost no pre-travel followed by a crisp 5lb break. Total unloaded weight is 37.7 oz's

This PT1911 is the same as most 1911's nothing special to report. It was born in 2015 according to mother Taurus, and looks like it has been carried and shot. The finish is about 95% with some holster wear. Internal components other than having to tune the extractor a bit, are in great shape. Lots of good rifling in the bore, and very few chatter or other machining marks. Did my normal clean, polish, lube job and went out to play.

This sticky was at 25 yards, the sights while weak, are still present enough to find a good POA. 100 rounds of mixed 9mm with no issues, extraction is perfect, and the following ejection is consistent over my right shoulder. The action is smooth and of course recoil is just an after thought. I like Taurus and RIA 1911's, they provide excellent value and are usually very reliable. Thanks for reading , I am getting my cosmoline removal tools ready for the upcoming Makarov. I have been finding good prices on 9mm Mak, brass cased for under $12 a box. Got 200 rounds in today with 250 more coming in next week. Can't wait...

Nice adoption ! I love it when somebody brings home a poor Taurus orphan. Looks like you got a good one, good groups at 25 yards. Congrats !

Quick question, how did you 'tune' the extracter?

Quick question, how did you 'tune' the extracter?
Do a static shell hold test. Field strip - slide in a spent shell into the extractor, center on the breech face. It should seat with enough tension to hold it in place snugly. To tune ( fancy gunsmith term ) you remove the extractor, I put it in a leather padded vise, Tune(the fancy term for bending it) either more positive for a loose shell or negative for too tight of a shell. Ok sorry more of those fancy gunsmith terms. Positive means bend the extractor arm to reduce the gap of the extractor claw to breech face spacing. Negative means bend it away from the breech face. Remember you aren't trying to bend the claw itself, you want to bend the arm of the extractor to increase/decrease extractor tension. This is done slowly a little at a time as the metal will fatigue and could break if bent too much or too many times. Not a real issue though as a replacement extractor can be had for as little as $15. FYI often a bit of fitting is required, but occasionally they fit perfectly. Sounds complicated - but really not too bad.

You need to suggest he give it to you, because it needs a home. If you settle 1/2 way between, it should be pristine.

You are right, I have one like that also, It really gives you no place to start when he has already doubled what it's worth. He is asking to be insulted from the beginning. Just walk away, shaking your head. Tell him what you think, if he asks.

That would be great - It is amazing how many bikers run these country roads, especially in September. If you can drop on by.
