Alliant BE-86 powder first use range report (10mm and .45ACP)

I purchased a couple of lbs of BE-86 a while ago as the LGS was out of all the handgun powder I usually use. I wasn't out but do like to stock pile and this one had been consistently on their shelves for quite some time but I'd been just too lazy to work up loads for yet another powder.

Initial report is : Impressed.

Conditions: Sunny 68°f, no wind. Relative humidity: 20%

I fired from a rest at 15 yards distance through a Chrony Alpha Master set 3 yards from the muzzle.

I started off with the Glock, which I think might have been a mistake to do without gloves (been doing some landscaping around the house and my hands are already kind of beat up!) as even the minimum charge was fairly brutal (although satisfying).

I also left my target printouts sitting on the printer and was forced to make liberal use of .357 caliber tape.

The .45ACP's were potent but still very comfortable to shoot and nicely accurate.

Typical grouping for this load set:

On a side note - the max loads exhibited no pressure signs of any sort in any of the loads and produced better results than even some over-max loads that I had tested a while back with both BlueDot and Power Pistol.

Alliant pistol powders are SO versatile. I have a lot of experience with Bullseye and Unique. I just don't see BE-86 or Power Pistol on local shelves.

Did you post chrono numbers? The info looks truncated - maybe it's me on the phone...

It is there, I just don'e ever recall seeing it posted this way on the forum before. Each chart has a slide bar. Is the slide bar a new feature? Never saw it before on a chart.

Thanks for the report :thumb:

I also would like to see some chrony numbers. I would assume that 3 yds is your standard distance, would you share why you chose that distance?

Duh!!!! slide bar, thanks FNKL :hand2:

I picked 15 yards primarily because of the topography of the range and where I could get the target stand to stand relatively straight ;).

I also generally shoot from a minimum of 15 yards - I'm pushing for great groups at 25 yards but still have a bit of work ahead of me.

I do not know why it got formatted like that. It compressed my text as well, to the width of the table window (I pasted copied cells from my reloading spreadsheet, maybe that's why)

The standard deviation numbers are what impressed me most. Generally very low.

Nice report ! I have a bottle of Power Pistol I found, it's like hens teeth around here. It may be time to break that out.....Alliant powders seem more scarce these days than Hodgdon.

Same here. I have been scouting for Bullseye for a couple weeks now.

Very nice groups! I'll have to see if the LGS here has any on the shelf to try in my .40 S&Ws and .45 ACPs. I usually use 231/HP-38 in the.45 and Titegroup in the .40.

I'm starting to see it in the gun store I go to in north little Rock I almost picked up a pound Friday when I was down there but talked myself out of it maybe I should try it though I've got several pounds of different powders now I don't guess one more will hurt anything but I recently picked up five pounds of Red dot. But everything I've read on BE-86 has been good it's just where does a person stop. A couple of years ago I only had a couple of partial cans of powder donated to the cause by my brother in law and neighbour it's amazing how much a person can accumulate over a couple of years some of th powder I've bought worked good like 231 and some not so good.

Should have those numbers in a week or so. Haven't had a chance to get them loaded yet but all the material is sitting there and waiting on me.

FYI - BE-86 is a tiny flake powder about 1/3rd the size of Red or Blue Dot and meters quite well.

No experience with it!
use accurate #5 for almost all my pistol powder, picked up some HS-6 when I couldn't find the Accurate 5, its a good powder but a bit dirtier than Accurate an not quite the same performance.
I got 10 pounds of #5 on hand now and will return to once the HS-6 gets gone.
I also have pretty much replaced the Unique with Hp-38 as the unique is impossible to find.

While at Cabela's yesterday, I spied some BE-86 on the shelf (they had about nine 1# bottles visible), so I snagged one to see how it will work in my .40 and .45. I'm certainly not lacking cases to load, that's for sure.
