Lightbulb not shaving coated lead boolits anymore

    Using lee loadmaster:

    Seating hi-tek 9mm/ l have all mods from mikesreloadingbench.com

Subject: no shaving of coated lead bullets when seating in step'ed brass. lssue learned from examining dillon die.

    Stations: 9mm
    1) old model (never used) RCBS sizer/decapper die, given to me by RCBS. Old'est rat in the barn taught me sompin one day on the phone.
    2) lee expander die w/my custom machined inner plug (step instead of bell).
    3) lee powder hopper, expander nipple machined off. Drops powder only.
    4) dillon seat die, ( no shaving) just seats because its wide @ top./no pre-crimp like lee and others
    5) dillon crimp die

Have you ever tried a Lyman M-die? I use them for almost all my lead bullet loading now. In an auto indexing shell plate they also help hold the bullet striaght up as the case moves to the seating die. They also greatly help with being able to set a flat based bullet in the case without fumbling around. This is a pic of a .357 with the case mouth expanded by a Lyman M-die:

Notice how the case mouth is expanded just enough to not shave lead (or in my case the coating) and the bullet is striaght up and not setting at an angle.

Shaveing occurs with lee seat dies because they are narrow inside at top. The dillon inside is wide as wyoming. I dont have problem with expanding. Did not realize the dillon seat die til recent. And i dont use bell expanders, i use RCBS and mrbulletfeeder.biz step expander dies instead. Never used a lyman M die, dont know what they look like inside.

When i pull my ammo from dillon seat the brass is still expanded but bullet is seated, then crimp die makes it ready for case gage. I seat hi tek bullets, i have to do it this way and l use a mrbullet drop die.

CAN U TELL ME ABOUT INSIDE OF M DIE?

    Pic I found:

It shows the case mouth a bit exagerated as I would never expand that much but it gets the point across. Re-reading your post I suspect you have a custom done version of pretty much what Lyman makes.

Not sure what to think of Lee seater dies being a tight fit. My only issue is the lack of a flat option seater stem. It is made to crimp if you screw down the die body enough but I would assume the Dillon is as well. How is the seating die shaving the bullets? Is your bullet that wide that it's hitting something in the die body before the seating stem?

l may look into m die.

my bullets dont shave. Re-read what l said about inside of dillon seater. (you can stick belled case in & out of dillon seat die) Most people dont know that.

Now for lee seater, like u said: run it down to far and it crimp/seats. I machine some stuff l need.

?? lookin @ right photo, looks like m die steps then bells? kool!

See i use bullet drop die, l use ricks (mr bullet) drop die.

I have a dillon and loadmaster. Cant use M die on dillon 1050?

I don't know why you couldn't use the M die in the 1050. Envy over your 1050 by the way. Since the bullets are lined up so well I find I hardly need to bell the case mouth much anyways. With plated or coated I don't even bother much. You can set the die body as deep into the station as you need and then be able to adjust the expander depth at the top of the die but I've found it's just as easy to screw down the die body until it's just right and lock it in place. But I'm using mine in the Hornady LNL AP so I can set it in the die body bushings and just leave it. Tell you what, if you get it and regret it then I will throw you a twenty and shipping for sending it to me as I would like to have one to leave in place for both .38 and .357 and I like them so much I may even buy another for 9mm. Yes, I'm that stubborn and like them that much. But then I can't machine my own stuff. Last thought, if you run the bullet feeder then I bet you will really like this die once you get it set just right since the bullet just drops right into place so well that it's always ready for the seating die when I use mine. I last ran .40SW with mine and didn't have to touch the bullets one bit once I had it set just right. It took about ten minutes of getting the expander set just right and the feeder die to follow up on it but oh man it was like music once it was right.

Sorry lil confused. honestly! This is seat/crimp die? I wanted to use in in loadmaster in station 5 after the mr bullet feeder. Would it be correct in station 5? Ive had the flu for few days, kinda slow.

My lee powder hopper drops powder only, i machined expander off.

Now i have a rcbs expander die in station 2, I could put the m die here?

This replaces your regular expander die.

    Resize / deprime
    powder drop
    expander M die
    seat die
    crimp die

That's how my LNL AP is currently set for .38's.
