I am no military arms historian but I was not aware the AR15 was ever used in a US military action. The use of AR15 in a couple places in the article does bother me a bit.....
What the article is referencing, is that the breakdown feature with quick-detach barrel is available for both the military M4 and the civilian AR-15 models.

I already have about half of that thing. It is called an AR-7. Works almost the same way, and . . .IT FLOATS !

    Yeah, just about half.

I've always been intrigued by those guns. Now I have a Model 1906...but it doesn't float! (if it goes on a canoe ride, it WILL wear a leash)

I thought they were putting one of those Henry take down .22LR semi-autos in their survival pack. AR-7? It is the one that everything fits in the stock and it floats. If I remember the original logic behind it, the theory was that any shooting match a downed pilot gets into ends up badly for the pilot, while the .22LR offered better survival use.

The reminds me of flying into Sarajevo during the conflict there. I normally crawl up on top of the cushiest pallet and go to sleep when flying in a C-130. I guess that is an Army thing, but anyway as we are approaching Sarajevo Airport, the Flight Engineer wakes me and informs me I needed to get back into a seat for landing. Well, as I am getting up, I notice the Flight Engineer has drawn his M9 and is standing by the now open side door. Curious, I asked him what he was doing. He replied that the pilot had told him to look for ground fire and to return fire on any he saw. Now I am laughing, I tell the FE, "Please don't (return fire). All you will do with that 9mm is piss someone off. Now we both are laughing and the FE looks at me, smiles and just says, "GxxDxxx Pilots."

Battle of Wanat: 10 years ago last 13 July, 1LT Brostram was killed in combat killing the last enemy combatant in the outpost. The LT went to the point of decision and made the difference that turned the tide of the battle. The original investigation found the Bde Cmdr, the Bn Cmdr and the Co Cmdr at fault for dereliction of duty. If you want to see what a sarcastic silver star citation reads like, pull up the company commander's silver star.

Current USAF Pilot issue has been the M11/M11A1, Sig P228, and is now the new M18, Sig P320. Many Pilots considered the M9, Beretta 92, to be a bit too bulky, which makes me wonder how a shortened M4 will work out.
Were it me, I would opt for both handgun and M4 shorty. The handgun on my person and the M4 shorty in the kit, just in case.

I feel if we can get a rifle in the hands of a pilot when they go down; all the better for the pilot.
