    Ruger Charger 10/22 Takedown

Added some upgrades to my Charger so here is a little before and after:

I added a Ruger BX 2.5lb trigger, Nikon 3-9 x 40mm ProStaff Rimfire with BDC, a KIDD easy drop lever, & charging handle. AIMID tactical AR handle, and a custom muzzle break, I had the matching trigger but the person thought the Ruger 10/22 and charger had the same trigger setup....they don't one has a cutout.

Very nice! I recently bought a polymer version, but not the breakdown model. The reason I got it is to submit paperwork to the ATF to make it into an SBR.

What is your ultimate goal with the SBR? I am curious because I was talking to my LGS guy and when this came in & he had a regular Ruger 10/22 take-down and the barrels obviously fit together so we were talking about how one was legal and the other way was not. So if you put the short barrel on the of the regular gun it is illegal and if you put the handle part on the long barrel its fine.

Are you sure they would fit? I wouldn't admit it here, but swapping the barrels would be illegal. But even so, I would be willing to bet that Ruger made them incompatible for that very reason.

I have a Henry AR-7 rifle and a Charter Arms Explorer II AR-7 pistol and the barrels are NOT compatible. The hookup is 180 degrees off between the rifle and the pistol, such that you cannot put the wrong one on. I think Ruger would be liable for making easy-to-swap barrels for the Charger and for the 10/22 breakdown models, I could be wrong though. I would be VERY surprised if you could attach the Charger take-down barrel on the 10/22.

I plan to get an aftermarket 10/22 stock, or perhaps just a folding stock, to add to the Charger for the SBR. Since I haven't submitted the paperwork yet, tho, I haven't bought any parts, to make sure the ATF doesn't think I'm going to do it illegally before I get the tax stamp. I just want do do it for fun, because I can. The Charger also has a threaded barrel, so I can put a can on it (I already have one and I'm waiting on another right now).

I can tell you that they are actually Identical. If you look at the parts list for the charger and standard ruger 10/22 takedown pretty much 90% of the parts match. My bolt, charging handles, trigger group, etc etc etc the list goes on are all identical to the 10/22 standard takedown. Even the receiver which is where the barrel locks in is identical, if you buy an upgrade from KIDD or whomever which is where I got my parts from they are all standardized.

Here is a picture of a Charger 10/22 and a Standard Ruger 10/22 you can't tell the difference.

I know it is crazy but I assume the ownership is on the individual not to break the law. Just like all the adaptors and "solvent traps" out there sure they fit but its on the individual not to place it on their rifle, pistol whatever to not fire a round through it, then it becomes illegal. I believe it falls under the same circumstances. Just owning the two isn't illegal until you place one on the other.

    That's my understanding as well.

I owned a Beretta Neos Carbine Kit for several years. I could legally assemble it with the pistol grip and rifle barrel, or with the rifle stock and rifle barrel. This was due to the receiver's serial number being sold as a pistol. Which is how I bought the Neos originally.

Handguns can have rifled barrels as long as one wishes.

What's illegal (without NFA papers) is to mount the rifle stock to the gun while keeping the short pistol barrel mounted, obviously.

Hmm. Interesting. Well if you are saying is true, I'm shocked. I can't do that with my AR-7's.

I think it all came to a head with Thompson Center. This may have been after your AR-7s were made.

That ATF link I posted mentions Thompson Center in it.
