Picked up an AR to plink

Found an inexpensive AR15 in 223/5.56 to plink with. I’ve been wanting one for awhile but manage to talk myself out of it to buy another handgun. I was into archery pretty heavy this year and spent money on tree stands and such. With that said i ordered a Core 15 scout carbine and just got it last week. It’s my first AR so we are getting to know each other before shooting. Reviews seem good and it’s a pretty nice rifle overall. Fit and finish are really nice.

I assume you have some ammo for your first range trip. You've thought about it, and think you know how much ammo to take with you. May I offer some advice?

    -----> It isn't enough. <-----

Whatever amount you think you'll shoot for that first time outing, it ain't near enough. Every one of us who has ever bought an AR-15 and taken it out for that initial shoot - and I mean every single one of us - wishes we'd brought two to three times the ammo we did. One of the amazing things about shooting an AR-15 is how quickly it goes through your ammo supply. You'll have this big ol' grin on your face and reach for the box or bag to load another magazine and go, "Oh man! How can I be outta ammo already?!"

Trust me on this. Go. Buy. More. Ammo.

I only have 150 rd box and bought an extra 30 rd mag. Obviously put a dent in it just loading up my first two mags.
I’ve already been scouting ammo on line.
I usually like to have way more ammo than I need.

    ^^^^ TRUTH ^^^^

Here is a good formula for buying AR ammo.

Decide how much ammo you will need. "A"

Before you leave the house double that number. (A * 2) = X

    When you get to the LGS (X * 2) = Y.

Just before you carry this amount to the counter (Y * 2) = Z

Now before you move all that ammo toward the counter look in your pocket for money, you didn't find that much did you?

    Buy all you can afford!!!!

Then go home, get on the computer and find a great deal on ammo and order 1000 rounds

When it comes order another 1000, because the first 1000 will be gone before the second 1000 arrives.

When this proves to be true increase your order to 2000 rounds

Continue to order 2000 rounds ... ad infinitum

One day you will thank me.

    BTW Nice AR

Unlike here, where 400 rounds of .308 was deemed by the police licencing dept as "far too much.." !! If we could buy the amounts you can I'd be bankrupt in weeks.

And the addiction begins! Congrats on the new Modern Sporting Rifle. As others have said, those 30 round magazines empty out really fast. Plus it's been said that they are Barbies for men (women too, can't be exclusive). The accessorizing is a lot of the fun. I recently saw an ad for bipods, then there's slings, triggers, different magazines and on and on and on. Oh, and don't forget that it's a modular system. You can purchase other uppers without an FFL, having them shipped straight to your door is seductive.

You will also need lots of magazines.
It is a lot easier to load 20 or 30 30rd mags at home and take them with you that way rather than loading them at the range.
