You can't beat a revolver for reliability.
But semi-auto's big plus is capacity and quick reloading.
Next you have to select a caliber. The .45 is a great caliber, but usually comes with less capacity.
The .380 is a good round, but may lack power in certain situations.

If you knew exactly what situation you were going to encounter, it would be easy to select the correct caliber. But you don't!
I think the 9mm is the best balance between power and capacity.
There's a video on YouTube about a cop that switched from .45 to 9mm for the capacity, and why.
If you'd like to see it, go to YouTube and search: "Why one cop carries 145 rounds". It's really good!

Welcome from Northern Illinois! I got to fire a PT 92 and kept the desire going until I acquired a PT 92 AFS for my very own. For accuracy and capacity it's a great platform.

“…democratic socialism, the great utopia of the last few generations, is not only unachievable but that to strive for it produces something utterly different – the very destruction of freedom itself. As has been aptly said: ‘What has always made the state a hell on earth has been precisely that man has tried to make it his heaven.'” F.A. Hayek
