Gérard Depardieu seeks (tax?) exile in Belgium

"Did the French star buy a house in Belgium to get away from it all, or just to get away from François Hollande's millionaires' tax? Depardieu will be in rich company. About 2,800 French people already live in the area"

The 63-year-old star has bought a house in the Belgian frontier town of Nechin to add to a property portfolio that includes a chateau in Anjou, vineyards in France, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Algeria and Ukraine, three Paris restaurants, a fish shop and a motorbike concession....
So what attracted the millionaire actor to an unremarkable property (described by one neighbour as "not that pretty") in a foreign tax haven 10 paces from France and 15 minutes by car from Lille and the high-speed train to Paris?"

"Paf!", say the less credulous; he is taking flight from François Hollande's proposed 75% tax rate on those earning more than €1m a year. There is no wealth tax or capital gains tax on the sale of shares in Belgium!"

I expect Obama will be sending a few Americans their way as well!

It always amazes me that so many want to increase taxes on the "Rich" and on corporations. When taxes increase, the rich and corporations have the ability to shift their holdings to a more tax friendly investment. And so many people fail to understand that all businesses pay no taxes. The cost is eventually and always passed onto the consumer, otherwise they company can't sustain operations and will eventually cease to exist.

Re: Gérard Depardieu seeks (tax?) exile in Belgium

I bet things would be a lot different if the rich had to pay an accumulated wealth tax and have their capital gain taxes triple, we wouldn't be talking about this problem right now with the fiscal cliff I'm thinking. We would have Romney already working with the House to turn things back while we pay Obama to go to Hawaii and retire.
"I am a better American today because of Barack Obama. Hear it loud, hear it clearly. I am a better American today because of Barack Obama. I know what my country has done, both good and bad. I have a deep appreciation of what this country is and what the American people are capable of. This is not a setback. This is a challenge and believe me, the American people are up to the challenge,...." -Glenn Beck
