This REALY P#$%@$ me off! Rant

    *Warning* Rant

We live in an apartment complex. Our neighbor, whom we have to share an alcove with, is on every state funding you can imagine. Section 8 housing, food stamps, disability... and probably ones I'm not aware of and now I just found out she's getting a free CELL phone from the government. I was just wondering the other day how it is she can afford to yack all day long on a cell phone when she doesn't have much income, now I know. Normally this wouldn't upset me, I know some people need these funds, but this particular woman is only in the situation she is in because she smoked, drank, injected and snorted her way into disability. This is from her own doing from years of drug and alcohol abuse. A few years ago when I was unemployed Jack and I couldn't get squat because he 'made to much' even though we were barely eating, had cut off all luxuries (cable tv, cell phone, air conditioning..etc.) I was even hand washing and drying our clothes because we couldn't afford the extra electric.

On top of it, she's a hoarder and if any of you know what that's like you know what we are dealing with. Every time we walk out our door we have to wade through piles of her junk. It's embarrassing to have anyone over and I'm always afraid people will think it's our stuff. Our landlord has had it with her and has threatened to evict her, but has yet to do it. He's getting a monthly check from housing that's guaranteed rent for him. GRRR!

I hate to google the free cell phone fund as I'm sure I wont like to find out who's actually paying for her bill! Start digging deep because she's awful windy.

The taxpayers actually pay double for these phones for welfare recipients. Tax money from the working class to the Government to pay the actual bills on these phones, and the working class also pay higher rates on their phone plans to defray the lower rates the carriers charge the Govt. on the freebie phones.

It seems like I once read that you have to have an income that is double the poverty line to live as well as someone below the poverty line. Welfare is the single biggest factor in making our society non-productive.

When I was working years ago, we would have to shut off delinquent utilities, water and electric. You wouldn't believe the indignant individuals that would come to the payment office to rant and rave about how they couldn't survive without their electric so they could watch their cable tv and run the ac all summer. They always would brag about how even the government paid for their cable as if to flaunt it in your face. It wasn't too long before the county welfare office would call and sure enough we'd be turning the utilities back on because of some song and dance they had whine about. Nothing wrong with helping people out when they need it mind you, but there were always those same ones who would abuse the system. I guess now cell phones are a necessity of life.

It's actually NOT a gov program. It started back in the Reagan era and has been going steady since then. The telecom companies pay for it. The cell phone is from Tracfone but other companies provide the same sort of service if you call and ask. I looked into it back when I first saw a billboard for it. I knew of the program sort of from an Uncle who was disabled thru the railroad. He got free phone at home thru it. But until I saw the billboard I didn't know it extended to the cell phone companies.

It's actually kind of a loss leader as the amount of minutes that they get for free are not a lot. It's the phone company's way to put more cell phones into people's hands knowing that they will become addicted to calling and texting and will spend more money.

If there are articles/trash blocking your hallways and means of egress, drop a dime to the Fire Chief. Those passageways need to be clear for the safety of the occupants. Once the Landlord has to deal with citations a few times, he won't be so eager to be collecting that rent.

No. I asked Tracfone back when I still used them. The lady laughed and said they lose way more money from drug dealers who buy a phone and then ditch it. Or the ones who figure out how to rig up false codes and get free air time over and over.

If someone on the program wants or needs extra minutes and she said they usually do, they have to buy them. It is a discounted cost but they still make a profit on those minutes. So figure the profit they make on our minutes. Plus the company gets a tax deduction for the program but supposedly it is very small in proportion.
