    So...you like big bullets?

USS Newport News (CA-148 ) CA = Heavy Cruiser.

This is a video taken from the ship I was stationed on in 1966 during an UNREP (Underway Replenishment) from an ammunition ship. 4 years later, I was stationed on an ammunition ship. I didn't shoot this video but have seen the same thing several times from the other end. Those things that look like power cases....they are. I left her to go to electronics school in Feb 67, she went to Vietnam later that year and fired 20,000 rounds of 8" and 30,000 rounds of 5" ammunition in support of US and NATO troops. Her radio call sign was "Thunder" because that's what it sounded like on shore when she opened up.

At the time I was aboard, she was the most heavily armed ship in the world and would have given a battleship all it wanted in a 1 on 1 battle because of her speed, maneuverability, and rate of fire. Automatic loading, radar controlled guns, and the last of the all-gun cruisers. Those projectiles weigh 335 pounds each and the 78 pound charge of black powder gave it about the same muzzle velocity as a 220 grain 30-06 projectile...roughly 2,500 fps. The 9 guns could each fire one round every 10 seconds for an effective fire rate on target of one round about every 2 seconds with a range of 17 miles. A "broadside" also added eight 5" guns with a range of 10 miles.

At what point do they stop being bullets and become just projectiles?
