Why? a DEA agent told me, years ago, they grow and smoke the best pot.

I've known Amish my whole life and much of what they do doesn't surprise me one bit. They are not all that different than anyone else.

Yep. When money's involved.... They've found plants mixed in with the corn on Amish farms around here but they blame "guerilla growers" and the cops just confiscated the weed.

I grew up among 'em, and have lived most all my life in their midst. I have quite a number of Amish and Mennonite friends, as well as some of other orders, and even though they wear straight collars and doublefall britches, they still put em on "one leg at a time", just like everybody else.

There are good and bad in all of them. It's just when you hear about such stuff as growing the weed, or a boom-box, LED's and a case of beer in a buggy that the contrast is highlighted in our eyes.

The closer you get to them, the more the contrasts become apparent, but overall, they are not that much different in their hopes and desires for their community, for their children, or for our nation. "Conscientious objectors", the most of them, but in wartime great herds of them served as medics and in other non-combatant, humanitarian roles.

You must be careful what you pretend to be, because in the end, you are what you pretend to be.

Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted. . . . . . . . . . . . .. — Frank Herbert, Chapterhouse: Dune

About 30 years ago, we used to take our deer to an Amish family for processing. They skinned, butchered and packaged the meat for $20. All while you wait.

Used to be a farmer around Muleshoe, TX who would use undocumented workers (can't say the wet's word anymore). He grew Pot also in the cornfields, and if he got caught, he blamed it on his workers. He always held back a lot of their pay for them to take back home at the end of the season. Probably harvested most of the pot and then turned them in!

They're into almost everything around here......'cept maybe auto repair. They've got lumber mills, do logging, they also build and sell pre-built sheds and cabins, even some pretty elaborate tree stands. They're about the cheapest place around for pipe, extruded and plate steel plus they do a lot of construction contracting, pretty much have the market cornered on metal roofing.
