I didn't think about that. This virus isn't going to wait until it gets to California, though. Seattle has a homeless camp problem that matches anything in California - probably more so, in that the homeless tend to stay more closely grouped together in cold, damp, and rainy weather, than in the warmer winter climes of California. Say and think what you will about them, the homeless are human beings, too. If this reaches their camps, it will be heartbreaking.

Rickenbacher39, you live in that area. If you read this, would you tend toward backing up my fears, or debunking them?

    I'll start one:
    It's all Trump!
He's colluding with the chinese to develope a virus that'll wipeout the democrat...I mean, homeless camps in our big cities!
Looks like the chinese are building a mass grave, not a 6-day hospital.

Wonder if this could be some Chinese biological weapon that got out? Those are usually bacteria though.

    [/ TINFOIL HAT]

Sounds of this it could get very ugly, and quickly too. How many people have already carried this across the globe?
Here in the Wake County NC area we have a pretty substantial Chinese population.

It started in a market that sells exotic animals for human consumption. Bats carry the virus and speculation is that a snake that was for sale at the market ate an infected bat and a
person at the market contracted the virus from the snake.

That is a good question. I count one backhoe, one reach forklift, 4 dozers, and more than 30 trackhoe excavators in the opening photo. That is a lot of excavators.

Uhhh, Nope. Bacteria are fairly easy to beat - even MRSA (methicillin resistant staph) can be killed. Viruses, on the other hand, can be difficult to beat. They have a natural ability to alter their cell membranes to not be recognized by antivirals - not to mention viruses do their damage while living inside your body's natural cells. Bacteria exist outside of the body's natural cells so you don't have to worry about penetrating normal human cells to get with them. If you happen to run across a true biological weapons facility you can bet they are engineering a deadly virus.

Anyone here remember the "bird flu" outbreak we had ~ 2010-2011? That was a viral based illness that, once again, came out of the Hunan area of China. Pregnant women were dropping dead because of it; immune "naive" teens were dying quickly too.

A quick caveat. Microbiology is a first year course in med school. It lasts the entire year - some courses are just 2 quarters long - and comprises mostly bacteriology and virology. I've been familiar with all the common and usual viruses (influenza A, influenzaB, coronavirus, cytomegalovirus, etc) since then. The last 2-3 weeks the course our teacher told us there was a new entity that had surfaced and was killing people rapidly. Seems that a lot of bath house attendees in San Francisco got sick and died in about 3 months. Nobody had any idea what the hell was going on. The search was on and it want until 5-6 years later they figured out and isolated the virus. It was something we had never seen before as it attacked T helper cells (there are several classes of T cells which are part of immune system). They would get into the T helper cells and attack it's DNA and would spread quickly to other T helper cells. Anyway, that would change the medical and scientific world forever. Sale and use of rubber/latex gloves went through the roof. The wearing of hazmat suits and face shields by healthcare workers, now in common use, were nowhere to be seen back then.

Another health culprit that was being tackled a year or few later - the acute pneumonia which attacked the scores of old Legion soldiers - AKA legionnaire's disease. That turned out to be bacterial and the mystery was solved within 4-6 months and quickly treated with standard antibiotics already on the market.

I'd shy away from anything made in China 'til we know how it spreads......might have to change the name from walmart to quarantinemart.

Predictions about California's impending plague have been growing as rapidly as the stench of human feces in California cities.

There is a toxic intersection of several issues: California lawyers viewing any chemical meant to control pests as a lucrative target for lawsuits, environmental laws aimed at preventing the theoretical extinction of the Western Three-toed Tree Octopus, feel-good policies and laws that not only support but attract homeless populations while impeding any effort to solve the problems that resulted in homelessness, and governmental leadership aimed at deflecting any responsibility for the looming crisis to anyone else.

Put these together, drop a small, simple person-to-person communicable respiratory disease into the mix and while doesn't rise to the level of a conspiracy, it would be no less fatal for the tens of thousands of homeless people in the major cities of California.

Expand that with the ones who would likely flee the area if such an outbreak happened and the situation does seem to be a bit more serious.
