    Keto Diet

Stopped by my local tire and auto shop today for a trailer inspection that needed to be done before the end of the month. Boy howdy was I surprised when I walked into the shop and there stood both of the owners but each looking much younger and much more lighter. In talking with them they have been on the Keto Diet for the last 4 1/2 months. Each of them loosing approx. 60 pounds so far. One of them told me that his wife went on the diet with him and has lost about the same weight.

I came home and told my wife about their dramatic weight drop by using the Keto Diet and of course now she is interested in trying the Keto or at least finding out more information on it.

So, my question is, have any of you here tried or are currently on or used the Keto Diet and what would you share about doing so.

I did do some reading, not a lot as of yet, but it almost sounds too good to be true as to what the results can be. Not to mention some of the foods that are on the diet roster.

Please jump in here and share your knowledge. Being a realist I know that if she goes Keto, I will join her if for no other reason than that of support.

    That sounds unhealthy to me.
Too much weight loss too fast.
My doctor says a couple pounds a month is safer and healthier.

My son and his wife did it for over six months. ("All the bacon you want, Dad") and they each dropped a good sixty pounds, without any health risks. Their doctor was extremenly pleased with their results. I mean, these kids were serious about it, (SH is diabetic, he's "pre") and followed all the rules.

They're healthier and happier, and I hope they pick it up again after the holidays, as it has made a difference in their enjoyment of life

The Keto and by extension, the Paleo diets are just modern revamps of the Atkins diet. The purpose to to cut out all sugars and carbs and force your body into Ketosis. Ketosis is when your body starts metabolizing fats and proteins in your body for survival. Once it becomes accustomed to the Keto diet, it will metabolize the fat and protein in your diet and any higher caloric demands it makes up for by metabolizing your fat reserves. It's like going full on carnivore and leaving everything else for animals you plan on eating.
If you want to start a Keto or Paleo diet, talk with your GP first and make sure everyone's on the same page. A drastic change in diet may shift the meds and/or dosages you take.

I started last January and dropped 20 pounds in the first four months, have held steady since then. No increased exercise is most likely the reason I didn't lose more. Over the last 4 months went "lazy keto" where I wasn't watching the carb intake as much, but still greatly reduced from my old lifestyle. I was a big chip eater...tortilla chips..pasta..rice...you name it. If it's a carb or has sugar I was all in .

Dr. Marc Segal was on Fox just a day or so ago talking about the current programs involving fasting. He explained that we have a metabolic "switch" which alternates between burning fat and burning sugar. When insulin resistance is in place in the body, we currently crave carbs which are easily used for energy and bodily functions and we store the fat away.

My big deal, and the reason that I started exploring the Keto lifestyle, was my A1C which kept climbing into pre-diabetes levels. My mother and brother both had type II with my brother essentially dying from it just this last year.

My blood test some 4-5 months after starting cutting the carbs had the A1c go from 6.2 to 6.0. The last testing some six weeks ago has it reduced to 5.8. The best thing about maintaining the lifestyle is that the cravings pretty much disappear, probably due to the elimination of the sugar high and lows. The rest of the blood chemistry was better also regarding lipids.

With the holidays I have been back to pasta, pastry and other carbs, but plan on getting back on the Keto lifestyle coming up soon and I will add walking and other exercise to boost it along. Losing 60 pounds would make me feel years younger I am sure.

There are tons of recipes available on-line with no bake Keto cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies helping satisfy the desert cravings. Keto flatbread with almond flour, eggs and meat for breakfast, flatbread and salami sandwiches and salads with the lower carb veggies keep "things" moving.

My wife and I have both been on a modified keto diet since mid summer. We have lost twenty pounds each in as many weeks. We feel fantastic, our blood work results have been excellent. I was worried about cholesterol with all the yummy bacon and meats, but my count has actually lowered since starting, Less than 100...

The wife and I were on the South Beach Diet (a derivative of Atkins from several years ago) It basically cut out the carbs and sugars like most of these new diets do, and it worked great. I lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks without any increase in exercise. eventually lost 20 lbs, and really should have stayed on it. Likely will be doing Keto this year.
