“…democratic socialism, the great utopia of the last few generations, is not only unachievable but that to strive for it produces something utterly different – the very destruction of freedom itself. As has been aptly said: ‘What has always made the state a hell on earth has been precisely that man has tried to make it his heaven.'” F.A. Hayek

Not much of a "musical" fan. The Sound of Music is the exception. I watch it every holiday season. Thanks for posting this!

I've been to the lodge a few times. Lunch there is pretty tasty, but a little pricey. I live about 90 minutes from there. Best visited in the summer when you can navigate Smuggler's Notch, unless you're a skier. In the winter the Notch is closed.

We enjoy the Sound of Music, but there is a lot of fiction in the story. Dad was probably nicer, mom more difficult, the kids were already musically inclined and they didn't escape walking over the Alps. They were not that threatened by the Nazis and left via train.

But it makes a good story. I always think the oldest girl looks older than Julie Andrews.

...When my eldest son asked me what he should have done, had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908, whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defended me, I told him that it was his duty to defend me even by using violence.
