Well, social security was taking out $135 a month for medicare. I got the supplement plan and the supplement plan pays me $80 a month in cash and social security only takes out $55 for medicare. I don't know how they divvy it up all I know is I was paying $135 before the supplement and now I get $80 a month paid back to me plus $40 a month to spend on over the counter meds and supplies. I guess that means I am still paying medicare $15 a month. I can handle that all day long!

I too am wading into this cesspool! I hate stuff like this, it gives me a headache! But I will follow this thread for more info.

This is my very basic understanding, but could be totally wrong, of things so far. There is Medicare A, B, C and a couple others. I think someone mentioned part F that is going away. Basically part A covers hospitalization and we have already paid for that throughout our life so there is no cost now. Part B covers typical Dr. visits etc. Part C is prescription drugs.

The other side of this thing is called, I think, Advantage Care plans and these are plans that you purchase from insurance companies such as for me here might be Health First. These Advantage plans have different levels of coverage with corresponding premiums.

The worst part of this nightmare is my employer pays 100% for my health care right now. I still have deductibles but no other costs to me. Gee wouldn't it be nice if the gov't didn't force me out of my current set up and into something that is going to cost me money. oops that's getting political isn't it. Sorry.

As long as your employer's (or your spouse's) health plan qualifies, you do not have to go on medicare. I stayed on my wife's group plan for 2 years after I was on medicare part "A", thinking her group plan was better. Come to find out (of course being on her group plan wasn't) I had better choices of providers and it was a lot less expensive to go onto Medicare completely.

When my folk moved up to Lubbock 25 years ago, there were still a lot of doctors who wouldn't accept medicare, well guess what? Those doctors over the last 20 years realized all their patients did indeed get older and all went onto Medicare and they could accept Medicare or have no patients.

My wife and I are both retired, and in early 70's. We have a BCBS of AR Health Advantage plan which is paid for by the Medicare insurance that is deducted from our Social Security payments. We also have a BCBS supplemental plan that we pay for quartley for dental/vision. I guess my input on this doesn't help much if you are not drawing Social Security.

If you are on a group plan and also Part "A" (hospitalization) Medicare, "never ever" give the provider both of your cards. More is not better, as neither one will pay if they think you have another insurance, and it will become a nightmare! Trust me, I have experience in this.
