A tale of 4 boys from California

One of my friends, named John, finds his life unexpectedly turned over. He is a 67 year old retired law enforcement officer (captain) from Gallup, NM who lives near me in Rio Rancho, NM. Widowed and living alone, his life has settled into a routine, with two dogs, a part-time job at a local bookstore, and frequent visits to a local gun store where he is an unpaid fixture, doing everything except gun sales. He's kind of the "go-to" guy for questions about firearms, New Mexico history, and the movie industry - he has been cast as an extra in many movies filmed in the Land of Enchantment, and has met several Hollywood types over the decades.

His adult daughter passed away several years ago, and her four children were raised by their father, who broke all contact with their grandfather. Unfortunately, the dad died this past Tuesday after an illness. My friend is the only living relative who is able and/or willing to take custody of the children. He will fly to Los Angeles sometime next week and drive back with them and their belongings to live with him. I'm going to take care of his dogs for him while he's gone.

The boys are aged 20, 18, 10, and 8. The two oldest he calls, "man-children." They have no life skills at all, and have never even driven a car. But, as he said yesterday at our Friday morning coffee meeting, what else can he do? They're family, and family take care of each other.

Like I said, I'm going to help by taking care of his dogs while he's gone. I'm also going to offer my help in whatever way I can after they return. Because that's what friends do.

My request for now is your prayers for John and his grandsons during this major upheaval in their lives, the drive from California to New Mexico, and the settlement and adjustment period to come.

This sounds like the beginning of the great American novel!

God bless him for what he's doing. This could be the best thing that ever happens to those kids.

at 20 and 18, aren't the two oldest supposed to take care of themselves? Becomes easier, I'd think - if you wish assistance, you will abide by my rules, otherwise, the door is another option...

First what a brave and loving Grandpa he is. The transition for the man childs will be hard to manage, but maybe those two will finally find the spark they need to make it to manhood. The younger ones, will hate not having all the online media addiction pulled from them, so that transition will take awhile. But given structure and something else fun to do they will thrive. God Bless him for making this commitment.

Let your cop friend know that the two older boys can take a few software classes (Java and SQL) and be on their own making $60k in less than a year.
The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest we become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance. - Cicero 55 B.C.

God bless John and his family. I am sure that the wisdom and patience he has acquired will be tested and I pray that those young people can succeed in their lives as a credit to their family and to John.
