Well, it might have been the conversation we had about the publisher's clearing house thing when she got one of their mailers the other day. She's always sending back the entries. We got one of 'em and when I got in the truck, I pulled it out of the rest of the mail and told her, "here, you won 5000 a week". We did that back and fourth, "what would you do with the money if...." I guess it's her version of lotto tickets, don't have to buy a ticket to win, though.

The con usually plays to people's greed or desires. After that, just a professional and calm voice to the scam and they will snag a large percentage of their marks every time.

Lamborghini started the same way. Tractors, it's what's for farming.

If she believes in the inherent goodness of man, she may need to re-read the new testament. We are inherently wicked and only good through Him.

When Leonidas was preparing to make his stand, a Persian envoy arrived. The envoy explained to Leonidas the futility of trying to resist the advance of the huge Persian army and demanded that the Spartans lay down their arms. Leonidas told Xerxes "MOLON LABE", or "Come And Get Them."

Sounds like the descendants of that Nigerian prince have moved on with their schemes.

When I lived in Las Vegas, in my early years, I met a lot of the old-fashioned con men. ("Ditch" Burns, Side-eye Willie, "Queenie", and Hollow Ike Howard - may you rest in Peace, The next Big Game will NOT be a con) - - - - They invariably started off with, "You can't cheat an honest man." The scams those old dudes worked were varied and truly amazing. And they were always teaching and recruiting. And as you say, "a professional and calm voice", loaded with sincerity and just the hint of "something for nothing" did the trick, just about every time. Even if the mark had someone who was a skeptic, or even knowledgeable about the scam, the mark was so convinced that he would go ahead, in spite of much advice and counsel.

You must be careful what you pretend to be, because in the end, you are what you pretend to be.

All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted. . . . . . . . . . . . .. — Frank Herbert, Chapterhouse: Dune
