Exclamation Update, the battle still rages!

The fight To control and eradicate the Burmese python From Florida's Everglades is on going. The South West Florida water management district is leading the fight To at least control the snakes. They employ 50 python hunters in the Everglades. Between these and another program run by Florida Wildlife management they have managed to kill more than 3000 snakes in little less than 2 years. Estimates by Professionals Report at least 100000 pythons in the Everglades.

The state of Florida has authorized $750000 to allow the water control district to increase the number of hunters and other efforts to control the snakes. They announced that there were 50 openings (which brings the number of paid hunters to 100) for new hunters and 1000 people applied for the jobs. The job pays in addition to a benefit package $8.25 per hour which is minimum wage. That does not sound like much but there is also A bounty system whereby the hunters make additional money by the snakes they actually catch. The bounty pays $50 for each Snake up to 4' long. Any snake over 4' long pays $25 per foot in addition to the original $50 per snake. Any snake taken while guarding an egg nest pays $200. The average snake taken Is usually between 6 and 8' in length. The largest snake taken so far was almost 18' and weighed 140 pounds.

The snake must be taken with either A-sharp edged weapon or a firearm. PETA has already threatened a lawsuit if it observes any snake not being taken in a humane manner. The snakes have virtually wiped out the small mammals that live in the Everglades. Fox, rabbits, deer, porcupines, skunks, and muskrat's have just about disappeared and no longer occupy the areas they once did. Alligators and bobcats are also threatened by the pythons. The snakes have started moving North and west out of the Everglades up the West Coast of Florida as well as inland.

I have to throw this in but whoever is managing this screwed up a long time ago.

In the beginning, instead of making it a "shoot on sight" situation, they only allowed those that purchased a hunting license to go after the pythons.

Of course no one wanted to spend money to do something that they should have been able to do for free and the early years where a difference could have been made was blown.

Now pythons are like the feral hogs, they are taking over.

There should be a standing order to kill them on sight.

And, PETA should be told to pound sand.

There are snakes and alligators in the Everglades. If someone from PETA shows up......it shouldn't be that hard to make 'em disappear.

I think just an open bounty would be more effective. 100 hunters against 100,000 snakes doesn't sound like much of a plan. What you really need is a long hard freeze.

Man, I wish I was twenty years younger ! Being a die-hard snake lover, I'd be down there hunting every chance I got. I raised a hatchling Burmese in my younger days, and he started out at about 18" long, and was 8 feet at three years old. Started out feeding baby lab rats, and when I sold him he was eating two full grown rabbits per week. (When he took a dump, you sure knew it). One person might be able to handle a wild 4 footer, but anything larger than that would spell trouble - their teeth are long, curved, and tear skin with ease. Like glenwolde said, a long hard freeze would help, but a bounty system seems the best solution.

...or transplant them into the Rio Grande to help solve the illegal alien problem, hmmm...

Convince Tony Lama to open a boot factory nearby and offer them financial incentives for utilizing locally sourced python skins.
