Linux Mint + Thunderbird (as an Outlook replacement) + Libre Office + a highly tweaked Chromium browser. I've been happily Micro$oft - free for quite some time.

I got so tired of dealing with computer problems on 3 pc's at home back in 2008- yes a lifetime ago. I tried Ubuntu- it was so easy to use and no problems. I have been using Mint or Ubuntu since. The wife's computer has win 10 now- she uses 10 at work. But the rest all have Ubuntu Mate.

The ONLY issue I have ever had with Linux Mint or Ubuntu was trying to make up my mind which I liked best. For the longest time it was Ubuntu, then for a while Mint- last couple years I have been using Ubuntu Mate. Now after reading this thread.....guess I'll have to look at PCLinuxOS.

IF you have some "specific need" to run windows- so be it. But of not- I'll guarantee you that Linux Mint or Ubuntu (and others) are much better and much easier to use. Its like Greenwolf said- you point and click with a mouse. I never use the command line or type in code- I don't know how.

For those who do not want to try and download the iso file and burn it to a dvd or usb- you can order a disk or usb ready to go.

(Edit: I got some of you guy's names mixed up- but i think I got the right name on the quote now?)

Really think Micro$oft is trying to force people to use their "OneDrive" cloud service for everything.

"We broke your computer with this update but thankfully we have your data!".

Just put a solid state drive in my wife's work computer. Used the software that came with the drive. Clone
completed, swapped out the drives, Quickbooks couldn't find a registration file it needed. Shut down the
computer, boot Linux off a stick, use "dd" to clone the drive, swap the drives out, everything works. I've
had LOTS of issues over the years that I fixed with a Linux stick where most people would have just bought
    a new PC.

Apple isn't much better than Micro$oft. Couple years ago Apple thought it would be nice if all their users had
all their media files on iTunes servers. One night Apple started transferring files without informing anyone. Next
day people were surprised all their mp3's etc were gone from their machine. Since Apple didn't want to get in
trouble holding music without the correct DRM permission it just deleted all the files without correct DRM. Lot of
people lost LOTS of privately produced music. Original tracks people had composed and recorded were gone
forever. Apple's thoughts; should have had a backup. All this was done well within the bounds of the "End User
License Agreement" everyone accepts and doesn't read.

    All the Best,
    D. White

The ONLY reason I haven't converted more computers in my house to Ubuntu is because the last time I was playing with it, which was about a year ago, the driver interfaces are still difficult at best to maneuver. For example, setting up my printer with the correct Canon driver was not an easy exercise. Plugging in my external hard drive and it doesn't recognize it as a device, and the manufacturer not having a driver for Unix. That kind of thing. If the people who make this code would make it easy, they would have a lot of people telling Microsoft to go fly a kite.

What i will advise everyone if you don’t want to mess with the iCloud then buy an Xternal HDD . I use a Seagate Backup Plus Drive which is 2-TB . It will back up any and all of your computer . I don’t have it constantly attached , just when i want to .

Agreed, Windows 10 is terrible. I don't want my OS updated, EVER. Once things get running (and it isn't always easy) I want my computer to stay the way it is for YEARS. I moved off WindowsXP after probably 8 years and NEVER an update. I then moved to Windows 7 for at least five years and only gave it up because my disk crashed. I thought it was time to move to Windows 10 and boy was that a bad decision. My PC wouldn't boot for at least a month. After multiple installs, all that would ever happen is the good old blue screen saying that something was wrong. After a couple of weeks of trying everything (and, of course, no one on the Internet has any solutions to any Microsoft problems) it just all of a sudden worked. After a couple of weeks, it would just lock up for no apparent reason. I thought it was my antivirus software (AVG Free) but that didn't seem to do it. After a couple of weeks of random lockups, it quit doing that, but my VMWare virtual machines lost their access to the network. It has been one disaster after another. I no longer rely on that machine, but rely on my laptop (which I'm using now) which has always had Windows 10, but randomly restarts at the worst possible times.

What we all don't realize, is that Microsoft knows better than us what we need as far as an OS is concerned. We think we want something stable that works, but they know better. Their OS's over the years have been so hackable and so unstable, they are constantly sending out updates to try to mitigate their poor software. Unfortunately, they are too brain dead (or arrogant) to realize that poor software updates don't fix poor software in the first place. Just remember.

This is nothing uncommon in today's software development mindset. Put the garbage out there and let the users deal with it and we'll try to fix the worst of the worst and to heck with anyone who actually relies on it.

These two posts together are why I haven't Linuxed. I used an external drive just as Ron describes. It's a critical backup. I would be FURIOUS if I lost all my photos.

And here we are, listening to how drivers for devices like this are problematic for Linux. Therein lies the rub.

I do know tho that out at my work place we use OS10 Pro . Pro version doesn’t come with alot of those unneeded programs . Of course technology takes care of everything so if there is any problems I don't know cause unless i have a computer problem on my work computer then they don’t tell us . But if i could afford 10 Pro right now that is what I’d install , not the regular Home vrs .

Did the Windows 10 update about four weeks ago starting at 11:00 at night. Left the computer on and went to bed. 9:00 AM it's still "updating". 3:00PM, it's done and I try to install. 7:00 PM my computer is still trying to install their updates. I finally get tired of it and force a hard shut down.

Did this every day for four weeks and it still won't install. Now I get an automatic update attempt every hour which I refuse. Getting ready to delete the downloaded update files.

When I see the downloaded files, they are for some lame social media BS, better suited for 14 year old girls, that I don't need or want. Windows SUX.
