My brother in law is a ret. USMC Major. He talks about his younger days in the Corps jumping out of planes fighting fires in the pacific northwest. He talks about this one town they saved wouldn't take there money one night they got a break before moving on. Movies, food , drinks... He said it was one of the most humble feelings. Everyone in my little town growing up was part of the fire department. We had a volunteer dept. of one truck, a truck driver and a fire chief. Anyone who saw the lights going on the truck was asked to fall in and help and we did too. In my teens i did countless grass fires and a few house fire. House fires we boys didn't get to do much other than on roll and roll up hoses but grass fires we got flappers and manned the line. The coastal savannah plain burned a few times every year form lighting or cigarettes out a car window.
