Dinner on the hoof, errrr---wing, uhhhh-------talon----------something

Our son moved to Minnesota last year.
Don't ask me why. It's one of the mysteries of the universe.
He sent us this photo he took a while back of an odd group passing through his side yard.
    Now I'm hungry.

Looks like a good place to live if you like turkey, and who does not like it.

For anyone squeamish about shooting turkeys, (What? Do you think they troop in and commit suicide a week before Thanksgiving?), I offer this anecdote:

We also have ample populations of wild turkeys in our scrub woods. One afternoon I pulled into a convenience store to gas up as the Coca Cola delivery truck was pulling in to restock. There was a wild turkey hen wedged between the cab and his passenger side mirror- obviously no longer among the living.

"Smacked into me just a mile or so back", he said. "Now I gotta clean her off'n the truck!"

He went inside to inventory his stock and before he could get back that turkey was gone. I watched an old timer take that bird and smile as he headed for his pickup. Turkey dinner tonight!

    True story.

Dinner on the hoof sounds like a steak order to me. You know, rare.

One of the funniest bits, ever. Actually, wild ones can fly, short distance at least. They roost up in the trees at night and ladders are just too much hassle. They can run faster than they can fly, though.

    - - this is Pennsylvania at its finest.

In Mercersburg, there was a store on the square, three stories tall, and around Thanksgiving, they would give away a whole bunch of turkeys to the townspeople - - BY TOSSING THEM OUT THE UPPER WINDOWS TO WHOMEVER COULD CATCH THEM IN THE CROWD ASSEMBLED OUTSIDE THE STORE.

    Yeah, live turkeys.

This was before my time, but the legend lives on there - - They quit it decades ago, seemed the PETA-types got their feathers in a fluff.
