    Question Homemade Ice Cream

I'm going to a July 4th celebration tonight, which will include homemade ice cream, along with the burgers and hot dogs.

Do many of you make homemade ice cream? It doesn't seem to be as popular as it once was. As a kid, I always thought it a treat to sit atop that old hand cranked freezer while the older men would turn it. And that first bowl full was pure heaven.
I have a hand cranked freezer, as well as an electric. I need to dig those out and start using them again!

Now homemade ice cream, is the best in the world, and second goes to Bluebell Ice Cream.

Every July 4th for about the last 20 years anyhow, we have gone to our daughter's inlaws farm out by Anton. There are always three drums of home made ice cream. My wife always makes Banana Nut, the in laws make Strawberry and someone else makes peach, and yes....it is oh so good. Last year the electric maker quit after about 25 years of service, so the wife bought another yesterday,

    Happy Fourth of July everyone!

I have many memories of my grandfather and sometimes even my dad cranking the life out of that ice cream maker, checking it after a few minutes, then cranking it more, and more....I thought it was a shame when he bought one that was electric and cranked it all by itself. And you're right, it's the best tasting ice cream in the world. Probably because it reminds me of my childhood.

We have a freezer but it's been a few years. I need to get that thing out. Of course it's electric so I'm cheating. Like you, I remember as a kid sitting on towels as someone cranked that old freezer. And ice cream suppers after church on summer Sunday nights. Yeah, I need to make some ice cream!

I do remember the hand cranked ice cream makers very well as the grown men or women cranking them usually needed a little ballast on top and with a quilt inbetween my little 5 year old hiney, I set of top of the hand cranked machine while a grown up cranked.
Butt could get cold in a hurry, even with the quilt.

I love homemade and BLUEBELL is ok but not for me . Besides yesterday on the news they showed a video of a black girl tool a gallon of Bluebell out at a grocery store , took the lid off , gave it a big sloppy lick and put the lid back on and stuck it back in the freezer . This was a video on FB going viral they said . Hope they catch her but it worries me how many more will do that ??

I bought a mixer for the wife and got the ice-cream bowl and keep it in the freezer. Trying different recipes. Hard to justify when you are on a diet. Ugh.

While I am old school in many ways I have embraced technology it my ice cream manufacture. We have a Braun ice cream maker and I've used it many times. My favorite is a recipe of regular vanilla with bag of mixed berries put in towards the end of the churning process. Good stuff. We did have one of the old style wooden bucket rock salt hand crank types as a kid. I also make a mint chocolate chip that's pretty good. I don't use any green food color so it looks like chocolate chip but its got a little peppermint essence in it. Very avant garde eh?

I used to make it a lot more often than now, and no, I'm not about to go back to hand cranking makers. It's electric only. Unfortunately food allergies have popped up in my grandkids so I have to be a lot more careful what I put into the mix now.

All my kids are coming over today and they insisted on doing all the cooking so I'll pass on the homemade ice cream and defer to their judgement, although one of my kids does have an ice cream maker.
