Next weekend is my foray into the mountains for sassafrass root. My Taurus 66 goes with me, on my belt, loaded with my "super-duper, overloaded shot cartridges". As a tool, it is just as important (maybe more so) than my pick. No cottonmouths here, just timber rattlers the same color as the leaves on the ground - and the sneaky darned copperheads, which hide in those leaves.

But the sassafass tea is worth the trip.

Then, in another month, when the leaves have sprung full out, another trip for the sassafrass leaves to dry and grind for file powder.

Everybody's got to have a good reason to go into the mountains, even if it is just to fool around My now-long-deceased buddy and I used to go up to the rhyolite outcrop and gather indian arrowheads, but that is now too long a hike for these gimpy old legs.

I hate to be critical, but that was a bit of a stretch.

I was pacing off the dimensions of my planned swimming pool when my across the backyard neighbor said, "Don't move." He then grabbed a golf club and pounded the cottonmouth that was stalking me from behind.

There's a species of pygmy rattlesnake here that the state claims is protected but obviously they're mistaken. They're actually quite easy to kill......they've got no helmets, no body armor......no protection at all.

Some years ago my youngest son was operating a big trackhoe for an oil pipeline company outside of Phoenix. He tells how one afternoon he came back from lunch and found a good sized diamondback rattlesnake coiled on the tread, next to where he needed to step up and get in the cab. He grabbed a shovel, killed the snake, and moved it next to the bucket. Then he dug a big ol' hole deep as he could get it. When he started back filling the hole, that first scoop of dirt somehow had a dead diamondback in it.

Shoot (whack with a shovel), shovel (scoop), and shut up, indeed.
