Been watching that....what a shame.
Current word is it was an accident. One can only hope, but man, what an accident...

Tragic. I really hate to see anything of historical significance go up like that.
I fixed the typo for you.

When Leonidas was preparing to make his stand, a Persian envoy arrived. The envoy explained to Leonidas the futility of trying to resist the advance of the huge Persian army and demanded that the Spartans lay down their arms. Leonidas told Xerxes "MOLON LABE", or "Come And Get Them."

Mon Dieu c'est terrible.
A great loss. What centuries of conflict, including two World Wars, left standing is reduced to embers in just hours.

The cathedral of Notre Dame in St. Lo was severely damaged as a result of bombing in WWII and was rebuilt. Hopefully the same can be done for this cathedral.

That is a terrible shame to lose such an iconic component of history. I was watching the conflagration and was wondering what all the scaffolding was in the video. Then I find that they were performing "renovation". I think that they renovated it to a smoking hole in the ground.
I marvel that in the last 100 of fire fighting lessons learned and knowledge of fire suppression gained that no one thought that maybe a building which incorporated over 50 acres of 800 year old timber just "might" deserve a system to guard against the events of today.
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive. - Noah Webster
It took about 105 years to build. From the late 1100's to the early 1200's

Other cathedrals have been rebuilt. Vienna, Cologne... But still, what a loss.
