    Bear Story

It was my first visit to Yosemite NP, back in August of 1972. Cousin Jack & me camped in a nice shady spot near the Merced river. We spent a week and had a great time.

On our third night's stay was one to remember. As we sat near the campfire roasting our marshmallows & drinking Red Mountain wine, I noticed a bright flash several hundred feet deep within the forest. Jack saw it too. Then came several more bright flashes from the darkness and they were each headed our way.

Soon a rhythm developed, four flashes in quick sequence, then a period of darkness followed with four more quick flashes. Flashing over and over then finally a mama bear and her two cubs came bursting through our camp just bawling their heads off. Had we reached out, we could've touched them as they ran by.

Soon the reason for the bear's fear materialized. These bears were being chased in the night by some nutcase of a woman armed with a bag of flash cubes and her trusty Kodak Instamatic. Wow. We continued to set in our beach chairs drank more wine and ate our fill of roasted marshmallows... waiting for this woman's screams to pierce the air, but they never did.

Hmmm. A woman flashing bears in the woods. I wonder if she was trying to answer her husband's questions "Does a bear defecate in the woods?"

And so began the phrase, "They were gone in a flash"

I think the choice of phrasing might have been intentional, for stylistic reasons.

Derailments and hijackings are de rigueur at TA, but seldom to this extent. Wow. We're gonna hafta rebuild the rail road bed from scratch when this thread is done. In the meantime, y'all carry on. This is fun to watch!

"Guns are a lot like parachutes ~ If you need one and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again".

The problems we face today are there because the people

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.
