The "Last of the Pre-War Models", here. I'm just thinking that before the Boomers, there was a significant structure to civil society, socialization, and education. Expectations were simple and straightforward, options and variety were somewhat limited. (electronic devices were non-existent - transistor radios didn't appear until I was in college) My folks had no significant amount of money, even though my Dad worked at the Army Depot. At eleven, I began by picking strawberries for a nickel a box, not only did I tend the chores, animals and chickens at home, I earned a dollar a week feeding chickens and collecting the eggs (morning AND evening) on the farm next door.

However, "structure" and "expectation" were radically revised for the post-war kids. People may argue the why of that one for a few more generations and still won't be able to come to a definite conclusion.

My own kids were introduced to real work before they even got into Middle School. Where they have grown and gone does not surprise me at all. Where THEIR kids have gone is a place I never will be able to comprehend, however; those young-uns were indoctrinated in government schools without quite so much "root, hog - or die".

You must be careful what you pretend to be, because in the end, you are what you pretend to be.

All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted. . . . . . . . . . . . .. — Frank Herbert, Chapterhouse: Dune

Yeaaah, so I hear a lot of this "all these participation trophy kids" crap, so who was handing out these trophies and not teaching them responsibility and hard work? Yet millennials get all the blame when they were raised that way. The millennials are all over 20 now and they've all realized how hard their parent generation have screwed them. Now they're behind the eight ball and catching all the blame while those blaming them crash the housing market etc. And no I'm not a millennial, I'm in my 40s, I just know BS when I see it. None of your are saying anything that hasn't been said by ever other generation about the next one. I'm sure people were complaining about how lazy the kids were with their newfangled flint and steel instead of rubbing sticks together...

I'm a Boomer and am still living and enjoying the Dream. Problem today is that many Millennial's do not want to be a part of the AMERICAN DREAM. They would rather be like Eastern European Socialists. Like my Father before me and my Brothers and Sisters with me we have Served our Nation Proudly. My Father survived in two wars to protect this Nation. He was in Germany when Hitler fell.

Millennial's have but one DREAM and it has nothing to do with our Nation and Country,

Times change, societies change work places change. Even the face of our planet changes. You cannot change time and you cannot change History. We are all Mortals.

Sorry but my feeling has become that Colleges and Universities have all been corrupted and are only there now to serve themselves. Tenured Professors making Millions of dollars per year yet never step foot into a classroom? Career Counselors that push students into courses of study that have no job market? The indoctrination of young people going into teaching which now has to have a bias twist to it. These are the one teaching the younger generation, leading the pack, molding perceptions. These are the ones pushing the Participation Trophies. These are the ones teaching we all need our safe space!

The kids today have missed out, and didn't get the influences some of us Boomers got and couldn't pass on. I'm at the very end of the boomers at the end of 1963.

I got interested into going into machining by a couple of machinist as a kid. The were Navy machinist and both were WWII veterans. I was surrounded by people who lived the depression, WWII, then Korea, and Vietnam. When these people offered advice to this stupid kid, I listened. They offered up their trials, joys, horrors, losses and how they overcome all in their way. Most of those people are gone.

These people passed on things you can't Google, get from a professor, or book. The look in their eyes, tone of voice, and what they felt was being conveyed. We who paid attention, can't impart or convey the same by second hand means.

It goes beyond schooling and parenting. It seems that kids no longer posses that formerly instinctive drive to conquer and succeed or "be the best" at anything, they've got no drive. For those of us in the grandparent range, the difference in generations is easy to see. In our and even our children's generation, if you asked a kid what they wanted to be when they grew up......their reply almost always began with "I want to be the first...the best...the (specific position or title).....". If you ask a kid from my grandchildren's generation the same question, the reply usually starts with "I want to be a/an......" with a seeming pre-acceptance of guaranteed professional anonymity in that field.

Kids today are unhappy because they don't know how to fly a kite.
Do you think their parents ever told them "to go fly a kite"?

It's the little things in life.
