LOL, as they say. This seems more like a failure of the IT department to secure the thermometer . I'll admit I'm not as current as I once was, but it seems to me that manufacturers of IOT devices, e.g, refrigerators, TVs, even Alexa, are more interested in selling the sizzle to a tech-ignorant public than they are in educating their customers about securing their products on the web.

So,my wife and I were talking the other day, and she asked me why I always carry a gun around the house.

    "Decepticons,"I say.

She turns and gives me the seriously look? You know the one."Decepticons?!" She says.

    "Decepticons."I said.

She laughed. I laughed. The toaster laughed. I shot the toaster. Goodtimes.

Not surprised as new tech spreads, it is leaving back doors. I'm in tech field and I'm not a fan of all this stuff. Saw a commercial the other day where a person told siri or alexia to start their car as they were late? Don't think I need a computer to start another computer? Skynet is coming faster than expected!
Life is full of give and take. Give thanks and take nothing for granted!

The other day a friend was having a problem with his computer. Screen was all messed up and couldn't get connected. I told him that the computer has a self-diagnostics routine to help him fix the problems. Told him to run the CHKDSK and MEMTEST routines, so he did. Later in the day I asked him what was the outcome. He told me the computer said to slaughter a goat at midnight and lay the entrails on the keyboard. Dunno' if it worked.

I’m sure there is a way to route the remote devices I/O through a firewall. Do I know how to do that?! No.

Bet IT at the casino does REAL soon though - or else!!!

It's not even back doors that are the main problem. AFAIK all those IoT things (is "Internet of Things things" redundant?) come with a default password. It's a trivial thing to change that to something a little more inconvenient for hackers. (As a last resort, RTFM, eh?) Every year, it seems, someone does a survey of the dumbest passwords and the ones found in the top ten include "Password" (this is often the default password from the manufacturer), "12345678," and "qwerty." And, IIRC, most routers now have a built-in firewall, though some may require user activation.

I don't know if I should be amazed or appalled at the actual ignorance of the self-styled "tech-savvy generation."

LMAO at this one. Will not comment other than to say, the average computer security person is lacking in "thinking outside the box".

Hmmm. May not get the computer running, but I'd imagine our resident TA chef could do something with that goat!
