I'm actually experimenting this year and not going to dock any of this year's lambs, apparently the Jacobs aren't prone to the problems of the "new" sheep. Basically though you want the tail long enough to cover the butt and genitals (if a ewe) but not long enough to gather feces that'll draw in flies. Flystrike is a nasty thing to deal with. I felt terrible for the sheep I saw at the fair last year, they were docked right at the base of the spine, leaving everything exposed...not good and borderline cruel...which is why my daughter isn't in 4H this year and won't be until they start looking at some of their requirements for "animal husbandry".

Banding gun and a spray bottle of iodine and, voila!, 7 days later the tail falls off with no discomfort to the lamb.
