In the UK handguns, as you and I know them, are banned outright. However you can own a handgun provided it ticks three boxes. 1. Barrel length not less than 12". 2. Am arm 'brace' must be attached and integral to the frame and not removable. 3. The total overall length must be not less than 24".

But, as I live in the Isle of Man, which is part of GB but NOT part of the UK, I can own and shoot pretty much any type of pistol / revolver I want..

EDIT: I should point out that you can get semi-auto pistols as well. They have the brace but the barrel, to meet the legal requirements, has a dummy suppressor (which is actually a 12" barrel ) fitted to give it the overall length. And only available in .22LR as anything over that is banned as a semi-auto.

You said it, so eloquently too. Can you imagine for one minute handling a LBR (long barrelled revolver) with all that metalwork attached to it..!! I've had the displeasure of shooting one. Not a heart warming activity. The whole damn thing feels unbalanced, unwieldy and just plain wrong. Oh by the way.. one more of the stupid rules in the UK. If you have one of these monstrosities only you can shoot it. You can't (legally) let a friend 'have a go' at the range. It's licenced to you and you alone. But if you looked at the link I added, I do like the look of those rear sights..

I heard that British police don't carry guns, and if they did, do they have to carry a handgun that looks like that?

Nominally British police are not firearms trained. A police officer would have to apply to become a ' authorised firearms officer'. They usually carry Glocks, as a handgun, and and HK MP5's though this is not always the case, other makes are used. Training is, as you'd expect, pretty stringent. The LBR or LBP is just for civilian use.

    More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...United_Kingdom

To be honest people don't realise just how many police are armed in GB. But it's constantly a thorn in the side of the police 'union' who are forever telling the British public that the 'ordinary cop' doesn't want to be armed as a matter of routine. My view, for what it's worth, is that if GB police were armed as yours are a lot of them would leave the service.

Remember, we don't have the same 'gun culture' as you do. For every one person in GB who shoots there are probably 20,000 who have never come across a firearms of any description. For example my firearms certificate number is 6415; now they are numbered sequentially so, out of a population on the Island of 82,000 only 6415 licences are issued.

This is worth a read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firear...United_Kingdom

    Hope this helps.

Wow. This just blows me away that the general British population is not an "at arms" people. A hundred years ago, the sun never set on the British Empire...you don't have a status like that, unless you know your way around the gun. Strange.

Yeah.. tell me about it. Politics and a lot of socialist politics in particular have lot to do with it. Consider this: we are, in GB a small island, we don't have the huge land mass you have ergo there is little need for hunting in the way you perceive it. Towns and cities have grown and it's now not a 'right of passage' that you hunt for the table. Add to that the groundswell in animal activists etc and those damn liberals who just don't understand that it's important to keep a balance in nature and that the land will only support a given number of, say, deer.

It's wholly a cultural thing, sadly. The great unwashed city dweller WANTS his/countryside to enjoy but refuses to accept the activities of those who both live and work there..!! Oh and don't let me forget the CLASS equation. Game shooting, deer stalking has always been seen as a pastime of the 'Toffs' (who owned the land). ust Google "Wild Justice" or "Chris Packham" and you'll see what I mean. You could do worse than check out this website:

    https://basc.org.uk/

I have been a member for years and they are the 'go to' organisation for shooting in GB. A bit like your NRA (of which I am a member too) except there's a lot more tweed worn.. LOL

Interesting. I'm almost surprised Brits would tolerate such nonsense.

Yeah, most Liberal minded people tolerate things like that...until the lights go out for the last time.
