Cosmetic FlLAWS on a Newly Purchased 6.5 inch Heritage RR Revolver

I am not knocking Heritage RR Revolvers, just wanted to let you see (picture of problem), and warn you to MAKE A THOROUGH INSPECTION of a gun before leaving the store (or paying for it). MY DUMB DUMB -- I did not.

Story -- I traded my 4 3/4 inch RR (bought NOV 2017) in on a 6.5 inch RR (on AUG, 28, 2019). Thought the offer of $60 on trade in was fair enough (4 3/4 inch prices vary from $99.99 to $119.99). Anyway, that is not the reason for this post, just was saying "Don't expect a big value on trade on a $100 gun".

I did take the gun in hand before completing the deal, but only to check mechanics (pull hammer back, see cylinder rotate, let hammer down, and repeat that a couple times). I did not thoroughly examine the gun). MY BAD, Should have Inspected Gun.

Took it home and later did a clean up as I planned to shoot it the next day on a FREE 30 MIN range time at BUDS ( comes with a gun purchase).

That is when I noticed a large major cosmetic flaw on the cylinder surface (like no bluing, say bare metal look). That covered an area at rear of cylinder that was about 3/4 inch at maximum point (it was crescent shaped) around the circumference and about 3/8 from rear of cylinder toward front of cylinder.

Then when I took into sunlight to take a picture -- I would say overall finish on the frame was Poor Quality. And, Ia dd when I cleaned the barrel, it was very dirty. looked like from firing the gun, but maybe just dust collected in oil left by MFG (Don't know - but pretty sure gun was new).

I contacted Heritage early on Thursday before going to the dealer (web site Chat) and was told they would send a new cylinder. I would need to send in old cylinde).

That may not be needed as I stopped by BUDS Thursday and talked to the salesman. He indicated BUDS would likely do something to make it good. I assume a new gun.

However. the Manager (has to approve any deal) was teaching a class and not available. He suggested I come back Friday and talk to a Manager (there are a couple mangers, and the other one was out of town Thursday).

SO, I THINK this will be resolved to my satisfaction (NEW GUN I HOPE, I HOPE). New gun because not only the cylinder problem, but overall quality of the finish on the frame is an issue for me. SEE PICTURE.

Worst case would be the alternative of a new cylinder from Heritage (PROMISED in CHAT). Hopefully, not have to pay to ship the old one back (just send a picture to show them).

I might add - possible the cylinder damage is related to the stain in the box it came in. However, for the full damaged area of the cylinder to be in contact with the box, the gun would have had to be in the 1/2 hammer cocked position. And, even then all of it would not have been in contact with the box. So, I do not know, but it appears something may be related to the box / cylinder contact?

Update as of 08-30-19, summary is: The Gun (6.5 inch) is going back to TAURUS, they are paying shipping. By the way, their one year warranty does not include shipping (in writing). So, good of them to do this. Also, Chat with them was a good exchange of information (I did send them the picture of the gun). The 6.5 inch gun left Heritage in June 2019. So, it had a quick deterioration of the Cylinder, maybe due to something in the box (picture below).

    DETAILS of STORY:
I stopped by BUDS -- Had to wait for Manager as he was tied up for say (30MIN - no problem). In that time, the salesman took the gun (4.75 inch I traded in) out of the display case (for info - asking $89.99 - allowed $60 on trade - new is from $99.99 to $119.99) and took it to the back (assume to manager).

Then took the new gun (6.5 inch) back also (assume to the manager). Then came back and handed it to me with a "New" Cylinder (don't remember exact words, but implied a new cylinder). HMMM !!! I asked -- what is this took cylinder out of the 4.75 inch I saw you remove from the display and put it in this gun? Don't remember if I got a reply to that.

I suggested I would rather have a new gun as frame has poor quality coating and would pay the difference (another $22) for the two tone model (I kind of wanted that model anyway and my cheapness on the original trade made me go for the $119.99 vs the $139.99) LOL

Salesman said, let you talk to Manager about that it's beyond my Pay Grade. I waited until the manager came FWD to complete the deal with another customer and we talked. As I guessed, can't exchange a gun once it is bought even if doesn't leave the building (FFL Rules Maybe?). He would have to give an allowance as on a trade the 6.5 inch for the two tone one. NOT interested in that deal - too expensive final cost (be another $75 or so).

I discussed with him that I had talked to TAURUS previously and think they will take care of the situation (even the frame).

He asked if I wanted the old cylinder (stained one). I said where is it - he said, in the gun you traded which I am selling as a used gun. As I FIGURED, they had swapped Cylinders. :-)

So, I took the gun (6.5 inch) and my old cylinder. Then did the 30 minute FREE Range time to see how it worked (shot 93 rounds with several different AMMO brands - no hiccups and as accurate I can shoot). :-)

Then came home and chatted with TAURUS about the situation. FINAL PLAN - They will take gun in and replace the cylinder and do the Frame Surface over (I think they are just stained and not blued). They are paying shipping and sent me a label.

I called Dealer manager and told hi the plan and asked if he wanted the cylinder back (one for the 4.75 inch gun) and let me take the stained one that came with the 6.5 inch gun. No Problem for me as TAURUS will replace the Cylinder. then Dealer will have a decent cylinder in reselling the trade in (4.75 gun).

I have no "ill will" to BUDS or Manager as fact is once the deal (I bought the gun) was done, I think FFL rules prevent him from just swapping a different gun. So, all he could do was offer a trade in (he said). Basically, once you buy a gun, you deal with the MFG for any serious problem that a dealer can't fix.

IT WAS MY Dumb Dumb for not checking the new gun better (Cosmetic was easy tos ee as far as the Cylinder - not as easy for the Frame as that showed more in sunlight).

He made an effort to make it right as he could.

I am disappointed they (salesman and / or manager) did not just come out and say, "We will swap Cylinders with you." VS trying to sneak it in as a New Cylinder. I might be wrong, but as I remember the salesman said they installed a new cylinder. And I know for sure I then asked, "What the one from my trade in, I saw you take it out of the display." (pretty sure the salesman said they installed a new cylinder as if they would have that in supply).

    UPDATE:
My TAURUS experience with a new Heritage Rough Rider (I traded a 4.75 inch for a 6.5 inch). Was allowed $60 for the 4.75 on a $119.99 6.5 inch at BUDS in Sevierville. And a brief relate of experience with a Spectrum. Summary: satisfied with TAURUS Service at this point. The gun is at TAURUS (Sept 6, 2019) and of course the a projected 12 week return. So, I wait to see if they also fix the Frame poor Quality finish once they see the gun.

I failed to do a detailed inspection on a Heritage RR Revolver. DUMB. I just took it in hand and worked the hammer and trigger a couple times to see that Mechanics were OK. Took it home and was cleaning it and saw a big flaw on the finish on the Cylinder (basically, no coloring on an area at the rear of cylinder for about 3/4 inch around it and 3/8 inch toward the front in sort of a crescent shape discoloration).

Then when taking it into the sun to take a picture of that flaw to send to TAURUS, I could also see a poor quality finish on the Frame (I call frame the area around the cylinder including the trigger). That showed in the picture I sent TAURUS also.

My CONTACT with TAURUS on this Revolver Problem and on a Spectrum Problem has been using CHAT on their web site. Click CHAT at lower right of the screen (during work hours). I am a poor typist, but I like the CHAT as I can put in writing the details of my concerns and send a picture thru chat. The CHAT is returned via E Mail and I can respond to that as well.

I was also working with the dealer, BUDS, and doing the CHAT. No luck with the dealer (understood as they can't really take a gun back once it is sold even if you have not walked out the door).

BTW, BUDS Manager did make an effort by taking the cylinder from my old gun (4.75 inch) that I traded in (they had on display to sell at $89,99 as used) and installed it in the new 6.5 inch. I thought well OK and took the gun again to test shoot (FREE 30 MIN at BUDS range on a bought gun). It shot OK.

Then decided the frame poor quality finish was also an issue. I went back to CHAT and TAURUS agreed to take the gun in (FREE SHIPPING). So, I went back to BUDS Manager and exchanged cylinders with him again (better for him to sell a used gun with decent cylinder) and TAURUS will replace the flawed Cylinder for me (per chat and based on picture I sent them).

I might add - the Spectrum ended up back at TAURUS twice - 1st time was 8 weeks, 2nd time was 4 weeks. (I recall - might be off on the time, but not 12 weeks).

I might also add - CHAT has worked good for me on both gun issues. So, I don't call Customer Service (verbal stuff gets messed up most of the time anyway).

Heritage RR 6.5 Inch Cosmetic problems (Cylinder and frame) repaired by TAURUS (Heritage).

They received it Sep 6, would have delivered it Oct 4 if I would have been home to sign for it.

However, I had plans for Oct 4th, so arranged for Fed -X to deliver to Wallgreen (strange) and it was held until Sunday, Oct 6, when I picked it up on the way home.

Cosmetics - Cylinder is good, new I guess. Frame appears to be refinished and is OK for a low priced gun.

Then MY BAD, I manged to mar the frame removing the Orange Spot Tie they had placed around the frame and hammer. It was too tight to get a scissors in to cut it, I used my pocket knife (point is about all could get on it) and manged to cause a few scratches. HINDSIGHT, I did not think at the time to use wire snip pliers to cut it (would have been easy).

So, frame has a few scratches done by ME. :-( I manged to cover them some and in long term guess it does not matter (be scratched sooner or later I imagine.

Main thing is does it shoot OK? They ran 12 rounds thru it per the letter for repair, I shot it some with the old cylinder before sending it in. So, should be OK - give it a try soon.

PS: Regarding shipping to me without checking if I would be home. I went on TAURUS web site, status said Repaired. Did not say shipped. I went on their CHAT and asked - was told it had shipped and was given a tracking number. Checked that on Fed-X and saw delivery scheduled Friday by 8PM.

Got in touch with Fed-X- a mess of Computer CHAT, then Live CHAT with this sequence: Gonna ship to Walgreen per Computer CHAT, then I questioned that on Live CHAT and was told would not ship to Walgreen, Live CHAT asked would you like to have a Vacation Hold, I answered YES and got cut off, it went back to Computer CHAT was suggested that I do a Vacation Hold online, so I went online and saw a place to set up Vacation hold and did that.

Not over yet, I was concerned and decided to call Customer Service (live person) next day and see what was going on. I was told it will be shipped to Walgreen. That despite after I set up a Vacation Hold, web site said it was on Vacation Hold. Anyway, I asked again are you sure, yes going to Walgreen.

    IT DID, got it Sunday.

I did have another CHAT with TAURUS when they told me I could put it on Vacation Hold at TAURUS if I asked before it was shipped. I suggested, they should contact a customer to make sure customer would be able to receive it if shipped. They just ship and assume you will be there or I guess they assume Fed-X will take care of it.

Good turnaround! A touch of black paint and the scratch should become mostly invisible... Get out and SHOOT that sucker!

    Thanks.

I did some touch with Spray Rustoleum (satin color black) by spraying on paper and dabbing it on the scratches with a stick. Might be a better way, but it is OK.

I did shoot it some in basement.

Last target I shot was with three AMMOS, 710FPS, 883 FPS, Thunderbolt 1230FPS. I was siting and had hands resting on support.
Had 3 out of the black 4 inch target at 42 feet. Think figured out about where I need to set the front sight (white paint on front sight) with regards to rear sight (red paint on it).
