Concelaed carrier might've stopped another mass shooting in Missouri

The CC was an off duty fire fighter, not an LEO. No one injured, not officially confirmed it the guy intended to cause panic or to actually carry out a mass shooting. Even if he said he wasn't going to do it, it wouldn't be the first time someone claimed that when held at gunpoint.

New York times? That's a paparazzi gossip magazine. I'll wait for a real news report.

It was just aired on Fox Chicago which still leans a little Left. The report is that the guy was locked and loaded...it doesn't sound like he was just making a statement. The cop said he was lucky that he's still alive...the firefighter showed a lot of restraint IMO.

Security video from inside the store would be reviewed to determine the man's demeanor and a possible motive
I'd be interested to see that too. I'm sure many people have thought about going to Walmart with armor and a rifle, all for defense. Since the man was only 20, he can't carry a handgun legally. If the rifle was carried by a sling across his back, that's legal in TX for someone of his age (I don't know about Missouri, and I have no need to research that). However, if he had it in front of him, with his hands on it in a ready position, then he's going to have a hard time saying he was just carrying to defend for a potential issue.

As for the firefighter holding the man at gunpoint until the police arrived... I hope for the sake of everyone that he didn't make a mistake. Not that I hope the guy was actually planning on discharging the firearm, because obviously that's bad and we don't want that. I just would hate to see this become a trend. People who are legally OC-ing don't need to have to put up with being detained (especially at gunpoint) just because there are a few crazies out there.

Personally, I carry everywhere I can legally (and don't go places I can't), and I nearly always open carry my handgun, because it's more comfortable for me physically. I really hope all this stuff lately doesn't cause someone to freak out at the sight of a handgun in a holster.

well done, granny! This is how the process for buying a gun can see intervention by family with a positive outcome. What I don’t understand is how they were able to intervene in this case but not in the other Lubbock shooting.

With over 200 million firearms in private possession, in addition to a collective ammo round count of over a trillion rounds, it should be obvious that we in the firearm community and culture are NOT the problem!

Update: from all indications so far, the guy appears to be an open carrier, trying to either make a point or trying to panic people. In the pic in the link, his rifle is slung barrel down.

Lucas said the man showed up to the business with body armor and military-style clothing and then walked inside carrying a “tactical rifle” and another gun.

As shoppers were panicking and fleeing the store, Lucas said the man was taking video on his phone and making comments to people while pushing a shopping cart.

Lucas said the suspect then walked out of the store, where an off-duty firefighter held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived moments later.

The suspect, a 20-year-old white man, was arrested, but Lucas said police are still working to determine his motives and whether or not he intended to shoot anyone.

Lucas said the man had more than 100 rounds of ammo.

“His intent obviously was to cause chaos here, and he did that,” Lucas said.

Thursday’s incident comes five days after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people.

Lucas said Springfield police officers arrived on scene in 3 minutes after the initial 911 call on Thursday. He said the scene was initially chaotic.

Lucas described the suspect as “pretty stoic” during the initial police contact. He said officers would be interviewing the suspect at the jail on Thursday to try to learn more about his motivations.

I hope not either. While I don't open carry a handgun that way myself, I certainly understand why others choose to do that. Unfortunitely we are in a time now when a sign clatters and scares people.

A "statement maker"...pretty stupid if you ask me. All of the people in their later teens can that idiots like this when the federal ban for all firearm ownership and purchases goes to age 21.
