    Fun with FOID

My LGS has my FOID card on file. During my visit last March, Floyd, reminded me that my card would expire this year. In days gone by, I went down to the local Sheriff's office for renewal and never had a problem, now renewal is performed online at an Illinois State Patrol website.

Initially, I went online when Floyd gave me a head's up. After spending a half an hour signing up, the website said my card would expire in June, then the only option I had was to log out of the website.

Around the first part of April, I got an email from ISP saying my FOID was soon to expire. So I soon logged in to the ISP website, applied for FOID renewal, paid the $11 in fees and logged out. That was on 04/10/2019.

On the 30th of May, I logged back into the ISP/FOID website and under renewal status, read 'Under Review'.... Grrrrr. After having to log out, I managed to find phone number where one could ask questions of a human. Whilst on hold, I managed cut up a pork loin and pound out 10#'s worth of tenderloin patties.

Finally after a 35 minute hold, a woman answered. After telling her my concerns, she told me that they were short staffed and to just be patient, my card will soon be processed...

As far as I'm concerned, the state of Illinois is responsible for my being a law breaker since the first of June.

I'll bet they are just backlogged with all the gangbangers renewing their cards.

Geeze, a permission slip from the state that grants permission to acquire and own.

They screwed up in that the bulk of the FOID cards are set to expire at the same time. The really screwy part is that without a valid FOID card is it illegal in this state to carry your firearm even with a valid CCW card...despite the vetting for the CCW to be far greater (currently) than the FOID.

There was a serious attempt to make the FOID requirement much more stringent with a higher fee, shorter term and electronic fingerprints being mandatory. This in response to a one off anomaly that involved a workplace shooting in Aurora IL when a firearm owner was found to have had a felony conviction in AL that didn't turn up on his NICS check when he applied for his ILLinois FOID. It did come to light when he submitted fingerprints for a CCW application and that application was rejected. Simultaneously his FOID was also invalidated but no one visited his house to confiscate his FOID and guns.

The move to exert more control over IL gun owners has quieted down, for now, since they got into a feeding frenzy for increasing taxes on everything from gasoline to Netflix. I am sure they will take it up in the next session....as they never stop.

Footnote... My BIL's FOID application got screwed up because he changed his email address from the prior application. He had to call Springfield to get it straightened out.

They now have 60 days to review your FOID application, the good thing is, as long as you renew before your expiration your expired card is still valid.

Absolutely! I don't have to ask anyone, if it's ok for me to get a firearm. Except the wife, and the punishment isn't severe if I try to hide it and get found out.

The following is from the ISRA (ILLinois State Rife Assoc) in their Thursday news broadcast:

"The Spring 2019 session of the Illinois General Assembly has finally ended. The big push by the anti-gun side was the Fix the FOID bill (SB1966), sponsored by Kathleen Willis and co-sponsored by her fellow travelers. Of course, it did everything but fix the FOID card but that is immaterial. The true intent was to destroy private firearm ownership by pricing and regulating average and low income citizens out of their Second Amendment Rights. The ISRA lobbying team and other pro-gun lobbyists worked together to stop this terrible bill. Had this bill passed, the ISRA, NRA and SAF were poised to file suit and had been for some time. This bill was clearly unconstitutional.

I want to thank the members who donated their time and constant vigilance who acted quickly on alerts that were sent out, calling for witness slips and calling their legislators. I also want to thank those who joined and donated to the ISRA, to all those who came to IGOLD and the dozens of other rallies around the state. It all made a difference.

The question is where do we go from here? First, we have to be ready for the first and second Veto Sessions which are scheduled for October 28th, 29th and 30th and November 12th, 13th and 14th. At this time, it is likely they will revisit SB1966. All members need to be ready. Then, of course, there is the Primary and General Elections. Just to announce that, is not enough. What we have to do is keep building through the summer, fall and winter. That means more rallies and more membership drives. We will have to work very hard to be ready for both the Spring 2020 Legislative Session and the elections. Whenever we have an event, please bring someone with you. I have seen how valuable these rallies are. The more gun owners we can reach, the better off we are."
