I never really got into the 40 cal. I stared with the nine and that is all I shoot.

My second pistol was a Beretta 96FS, that was about 12 years ago. Even then the ammo was crazy expensive, compared to 9mm or .45 ACP. I sold it after 3 or 4 months, and never looked back.

I'm kind of coming from the other direction. The reason that I keep my .40s is because of all the ammo I have for them.

I like the 40. I haven’t been able to shoot it in a year or so on account of a surgery. I am back to par now and just purchased a compact 40 to go with my full size.

Yeah, that's my philosophy too. My youngest son calls it hoarding and wants to do an intervention.

Seriously though, I've never understood the fascination with the 40S&W. (10mm lite) and apparently it's peaked and started to nose dive. LE agencies are divesting their hardware and ammo and I don't see the civilian market expanding after the LEO trade ins are gone.

Sold my last .40S&W gun today. FNS40. I now only have 9mm for self defense and 22wmr for plinking.

The .40 is pointless. The right rounds in 9mm will do pretty much anything the .40 will do. If you wanna go big, and spend a lot on ammo, go 10mm. The .45 is a better alternative as well.

I started with the .38 special....in the 60s. It's not all I shoot, though, but I still shoot it! I even still carry it!

I don't see the need for a 40 cal if you've got 9mm and maybe a 45 with the ammo cache squirreled away. In an all out war on US soil, the likelihood of burning through all of your ammo is slim at best. If the average person has say 10,000 rounds (including 22LR) then the chances that you'll go through your main handgun ammo is pretty low. the main battle weapon will be a rifle. The handgun is when you're caught away from your rifle or if you have a problem with the rifle.
With the police moving back to 9mm, there will be a glut of 40's on the market. Ammo production will drop to about what 38 super is. The 40 S&W was a niche idea round but it'll fade as it failed to do what it was designed to do. It was supposed to be better than a 9mm, but anemic for a 10mm. 9mm +P ammo is running about the same energy and 10mm just isn't as popular as would be expected out of a 40 "magnum" round. Nato allies love the 9mm and settled on that round so it'll be here for quite a while. 45 ACP is the pistol hero of WW2 so it's gets the honorary seat at the table. 40S&W just isn't there.

I'm sitting on at least 5000 .40 cases and a whole bunch of bullets. Simple turret press changeover isn't an issue.

I'll be hanging on to mine.

Hopefully, if another ammo drought comes along, I'll walk into a store and find plenty of .40, if I actually have to buy ammo.

    All the Best,
    D. White
