Range day w/ my son and daughter-in-law

This past weekend my son and daughter-in-law said that they were to have today (Wednesday) off, and did I want to "call in sick" and go to breakfast, then to the outdoor range, with them? Well, in a word: Yes! Not wanting to fib about being sick, I put in for a paid day off (I have lots of them saved up). So this morning we started with breakfast at IHOP, then off the west side range. My wife, by the way, does not like firearms, so she declined participation in the day's events.

I put about 40 rounds of .45 ACP through my first generation PT145. The Taurus had several fail-to-fire events where it took a second strike to fire the bullet. One round even took three strikes before ignition took place. Two rounds did not fire at all; after waiting the requisite 30 seconds each time, I removed them from the chamber and discarded them, after verifying that both had deep dimples in the primers. The problem rounds were leftovers from a box of Winchester White Box ammo. It seems that my PT145 does not like WWB ammo.

I also shot 40 rounds through my Hi Point JHP 45. Flawless! Every round fired, every time, even what was left of the WWB stuff. That ugly black pistol really is a great firearm.

My son let me try some rounds through his Colt 1911 model 80, so I can now say that I've shot a 1911. And...I can honestly say that I did NOT fall in love with it. Sure, it's a nice gun and shoots well, but after I was done shooting it I picked up my Hi Point and fired it again, and I actually prefer the Hi Point. *Shrug* To each his own, I suppose.

For the first time in about 40 years I shot a Smith & Wesson (4 inch barrel) .44 magnum (again, my son's), and it is exactly as I remember all those years ago. The recoil is very manageable to me, even with the hot reloads my son had on hand. Some day I'm going to have to shoot a .454 Casull or a .460 magnum, maybe even a Smith & Wesson .500, and see what this talk of "too much recoil" is all about.

My son's wife has a Ruger SR22 that she really likes, and she put many, many rounds down range. I might be a bit prejudiced, but I think my daughter-in-law is just wonderful.

I also shot my son's Mossberg 30-30 (open sights) and his recently acquired Marlin lever action .308 with scope. Both are great rifles. Matt and I found that the 30-30 has more recoil than the .308; I had thought that the reverse would be true.

A great day with my family, breakfast and shooting at the range, but the best part was that they wanted ol' dad to come and be part of their day off together. That is the most blessed part of this great day.

    Sounds like a great time.
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

The 2nd amendment is not about hunting or shooting sports, it is about the citizens of this country having the means to protect themselves and the states from the tyranny, oppression, and misery of an over powering government. Modern rifles are a means for the citizens to stand up to an over powering government.
