    Supply Chain (Tires)

    What's really going on here?

We had a flat on Friday. I took the car to Sam's on Saturday to have the tire repaired. Of course the Sam's tire center is "closed" but they are doing repairs. When I went back to pick it up, I found out they couldn't fix the tire, so they replaced it. The service tech remarked he was surprised they actually had that tire in stock, since they hadn't received a tire shipment in 3 months. I hadn't noticed before, but the tire racks behind him that are always full were at least 2/3 empty.

Is there a shortage of tires? Are all the tire companies making masks and ventilators instead of tires? Are all the tires being diverted to the military and national guard? Are they just not receiving tire shipments because they have been closed since COVID or are they closed because they can't get tires?

I don't know about tires for four wheeled types, but a couple weeks ago I bought a pair of Pirelli's for my Kawasaki and didn't have any issues at all. Maybe its a regional thing?

I purchased a newer car in February and bought a new set of tires at Discount tires and had no problem.

It could be more related to that specific tire size, than tires in general. There are certain sizes that were hard to find even before the whole covid thing was ever thought of.

Many of our tires are now made outside of the US. If the country of origin was heavily effected by the China Virus, production may have shutdown...

    From Consumers Reports:

For instance, BFGoodrich is owned by Michelin, based in France; Firestone is owned by Bridgestone (Japan); and General is owned by Continental (Germany). Yokohama is a Japanese company.

Complicating national pedigree further, manufacturers might not build all their models exclusively in any one country. The Goodyear tires we tested were built in Canada, Chile, Germany, and the U.S. Michelin tires were manufactured in Italy, Spain, and the U.S., but none came from France. And the tires we tested from Italian tire maker Pirelli were made in Mexico and Russia.

DeltaBravo gave his own answer, Sam's tire center is closed except for tire repairs. Inventory cost money and Sam's is not going to be re-stocking tires they can't sell because the Tire Center is closed.

Bought My tires at wally world with road hazard which is worth zero right now since the auto service center is closed until at least July.
Ran over a piece of wire and put a hole in My tire in the outside groove which makes it un-repairable, it would have been replaced under the road hazard warranty.
Since the automotive service center is shut down right now I just put a plug in it and hope they will still honor the warranty when they reopen.

Production may be down due to a manpower shortage. Making tires is tiring so when those folks get tired of making tires, they retire.

Perhaps people have discovered that if you can't find toilet paper you can use a tire...
