He has 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer and nowhere to sell them

On March 1, the day after the first coronavirus death in the United States was announced, brothers Matt and Noah Colvin set out in a silver S.U.V. to pick up some hand sanitizer. Driving around Chattanooga, Tenn., they hit a Dollar Tree, then a Walmart, a Staples and a Home Depot. At each store, they cleaned out the shelves.

Over the next three days, Noah Colvin took a 1,300-mile road trip across Tennessee and into Kentucky, filling a U-Haul truck with thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer and thousands of packs of antibacterial wipes, mostly from “little hole-in-the-wall dollar stores in the backwoods,” his brother said. “The major metro areas were cleaned out.”

Matt Colvin stayed home near Chattanooga, preparing for pallets of even more wipes and sanitizer he had ordered, and starting to list them on Amazon. Mr. Colvin said he had posted 300 bottles of hand sanitizer and immediately sold them all for between $8 and $70 each, multiples higher than what he had bought them for. To him, “it was crazy money.” To many others, it was profiteering from a pandemic.

The next day, Amazon pulled his items and thousands of other listings for sanitizer, wipes and face masks. The company suspended some of the sellers behind the listings and warned many others that if they kept running up prices, they’d lose their accounts. EBay soon followed with even stricter measures, prohibiting any U.S. sales of masks or sanitizer.

It's getting harder for price gougers to ply their craft now. And that's a good thing. I remember during the last hurricane, the state of Texas cracked down hard on several gougers, including gas stations.

I ain't forgot the FL AG having a press conference specifically to say that she was going to prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law, a couple of gas station owners that had been selling cases of bottled water for $100 or more each right after a hurricane.

She looked like she was eagerly awaiting the opportunity of prosecuting them- since it was illegal for her to wade through gator infested waters with a rusty soup spoon to emasculate them personally.

Price gougers during a crisis are one of the lowest forms of life still allowed to exist.

I remember the AG on TV telling everybody to save their receipts, notify the AG's office and they'd go after them. I know they prosecuted a lot of businesses, and in Texas that's triple the amount charged just in penalties, plus refunds.

Just for grins, I had looked on e-bay last night to see if price gouging was going on with hand sanitizers. There were plenty of listings with high prices, but when I clicked on the listings, it came up page not found.

I bought a large bottle either last week or the week before to be able to refill the small bottle I keep in my truck and the one my wife keeps in her purse.

I have zero tolerance or empathy for those who see bad times on the horizon and decide to proactively prepare themselves, not so that they can better make it through those times, but to take advantage of those hard times for others. Some call it capitalism, entrepreneurship, smart. I question those peoples humanity. I just call it slimy scummy and sleezy, those who would profit off of others going through hard times. Whether it's done with basic home goods requirements, medicine, gas, food, or anything else. Makes no difference to me, if hard times for others is good times to you that you can benefit from, you're a low life.

I found a recipe for hand sanitizer on the 'net.

    2/3cup 90% isopropyl alcohol
    1/3cup aloe vera gel
    Mix thoroughly
Small spray bottles available at Walgreens
