You will find that it varies from state to state and even from county to county within a state. My first permit took about five days and my last renewal took nearly the entire thirty days allowed by the state. I got my first permit years ago before the mad rush started and the last one last year during the stampede when most sheriffs offices were getting swamped.

I went to the Portage county office for mine, and I received it 5 days later in the mail. But that was nearly 2 years ago.

IIRC in Ohio the sheriff is required by law to issue your permit within 45 days if you pass the checks. They have to either issue the permit or deny it in that time frame. What takes the most time around here is getting the initial appointment. That took me about a month in Warren county. After I got to the sheriff's office it was less than a week before I got the permit in the mail.

Dan McClelland is probably one of the best Sheriff's in the State of Ohio. No surprise.

Wood County - a week. Guess I'll find out if that's still the case. I need to renew mine in August.

Yeah, in Ohio they call it a Concealed Handgun License, and I was told it's because that's all it is. Evidently Ohio didn't want any confusion over carrying over sized knives or other weapons. It's just a permit to carry a handgun. But as far as arguing over what to call it - I think we all probably knew what you were talking about. In the Rangers they called that 'attention to detail', but sometimes 'anal retentive' is a better term.
