One of my first jobs when I worked for a general contractor, was replacing sidewalks in the (supposedly) worst projects in Portsmouth. One day, the ice water I'd brought just wasn't makin' it and I got the urge for a Coke. There was a store just down the street so I decided to walk down and grab a soda. The guys I was working with practically begged me not to go in there, told me I'd never come out alive and all kinds of stuff but.......I really wanted a Coke. I walked into the store and there were two guys behind a counter, plus another five just standin' around it. They'd been talkin' and laughin' when I entered but it got dead quiet from the time they saw me, until after I left. The place was good sized, for a neighborhood store but all the shelves were empty, save for one or two random cans or jars covered with thick layers of dust. The drink cooler was way in the back but when I got there, there were only three cans in it......none of 'em Coke. I grabbed a Sprite and walked back up to the counter. Nobody said anything, they all just stood or sat there like they were in shock so I finally asked the guy who looked to be the owner, "how much?" With an inquiring tone, he replied rather sheepishly "fifty cents?" I laid a couple quarters on the counter, thanked him and went back to the job. Two days later, the cops came in and took everyone that I'd seen, plus a few others out in handcuffs for dealin'.

No...my read is rather a "witness" involved in questionable activities generating a lot of cash with 15 guys in a barber shop after hours, trying to put a game face on the killings.

The police are frequent visitors to this location and it's probably not for haircuts.

"On Sept. 21, Derrick Gholston, 43, was robbed at gunpoint by two men while standing outside of the barbershop, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. After he complied, the two suspects entered the business and announced another robbery."

"Gholston, a concealed-carry permit holder, pulled out his own gun and confronted the robbers, leading to an exchange of gunfire, authorities said. He and would-be robber, 18-year-old Carlos Smith, were each struck and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, both were pronounced dead within an hour of the shootout. In addition to the shootout, Beale listed a host of other crimes committed at the barbershop over the last two years, including a robbery last June, two thefts in 2018, another theft in 2017 and a battery in Sept. 2017."

    Correction...it was a Saturday night at 7PM...

It seems unlikely to me that Gholston would not know that "barbershop" was really (at that day and time, particularly) a place where illegal and dangerous stuff was happening. He wasn't a stranger to the neighborhood.

I don't believe he "confronted the robbers" with an intention of protecting innocent customers trying to get their hair trimmed, but rather to try to get his own money back.

And if he did, rushing into a venue and "confronting the robbers" is a bad tactic anyway, and is very much likely to precipitate a gunfight where there might not have been one otherwise.

He died like a man, which is what I would do, so I think that he did the right thing. Life is not all about "be safe out there", sometimes it can get real ugly.

This thread is rife with speculation, drawn from very little fact...most of which contradict each other much like our conclusions that we've drawn. Until we get more info, which is a long shot since Chiraq has the murder du jour being reported daily, we will close this down.
